5. PROCEDURE

5.1 Batching Plant

 The batching plant shall produce the concrete in accordance with the
approved design mix, applicable as per project specifications/drawings.

 After loading fresh ingredients, concrete shall be mixed uniformly.

 The Batch Plant Supervisor shall be responsible for checking that all
“wash water” has been removed from the delivery truck prior to loading
the concrete.

 The Quality Control Person shall perform the slump test and keep a
complete record of each truck of concrete.

5.2 Hot Weather Concrete.

 Necessary measures shall be taken for concreting under hot weather.

These measures shall include, but not limited to, spraying water on
aggregates, chilling the mix ingredients with ice and when ice is used in
the mix, maintain the correct amount of water required.

5.3 Concrete Tests

 During concrete production, cubes/ cylinder specimens shall be casted

from each grade of concrete as per specified requirement.

 The characteristic strength of the concrete placed in the formwork shall

be determined for 7 days and 28 days by the Compressive Strength
Testing of test cubes/ cylinders as per project specifications.

 Complete record of cubes/ cylinder testing with location mix design

reference and date of placement etc. shall be maintained.

5.4 Construction Joints

 Approval of the Engineer shall be obtained before introducing joints if not

shown on the drawings.

 Construction joints shall be perpendicular to the plane of the member or

as directed by the Engineer. Continue all specified reinforcement through
joints.

5.5 Concrete Embedment

 All embedment’s in concrete shall accurately be located and secured in

position within approved tolerance to resist loads incidental to placing of
concrete.

CONCRETE WORKS

 All embedded items locations shall be verified as per construction

drawings. Surveyor shall be responsible for levels and locations of
embedded parts

5.6 Concreting Operations

5.6.1 Transportation

 The concrete shall be transported to site in Transit Mixers immediately

after mixing and shall be placed within allowable time as per project
specifications.

 The concrete delivery note shall be endorsed showing the time of

dispatch of the truck.

 The concrete pour record shall be endorsed with the time of arrival at
placing site and the time of completion of discharging.

 No concreting operations shall be performed without the written approval

of the Engineer.

5.6.2 Blinding Concrete

 Prior to commencement of blinding concrete activity,

excavation/compaction shall be inspected & cleared by the QA&QC
Inspector.

 Surveyors shall layout the foundation on ground before and after Lean.

 Thickness of the blinding concrete shall be as per IFC drawing

5.6.3 Placing of Concrete

 Prior to placing concrete, ambient & concrete temperatures shall be

recorded.

 Placing of rebar and formwork shall be as per drawing and its approval
from the Engineer shall be obtained.

5.6.4 Compaction of Concrete

 Proper compaction shall be done thoroughly around all reinforcement,

embedded fixtures and internal corners with internal vibrators in
accordance with project specifications or standards.

5.6.5 Concrete Finishing

 The concrete face shall be checked for compliance as indicated in the

project specifications or construction drawings.

CONCRETE WORKS

 The concrete face shall be cleaned and made free from all foreign
matters.

5.6.6 Concrete Curing

 After completion of concrete pouring/finishing, necessary measures to

protect the concrete surface shall be taken. The exposed surfaces shall
be sprayed with an approved curing compound or shall be covered by wet
Hessian. These covers shall be maintained till end of allowable curing
period.

5.6.7 Edges

 The edges of the concrete shall be chamfered elsewhere as required and

as shown in the drawings.

5.7 Hand finishing

 In the event of breakdown of mechanical equipment, hand-finishing

method may be used to finish the concrete already placed and no
additional concrete shall be placed until such equipment is repaired up to
satisfaction of the Engineer.

5.8 Repairs to Damaged or Defective Concrete

 If some damage or defect exists, inspection of location shall be

conducted jointly with the Engineer and method statement for repair of
works shall be submitted to Engineer for approval.

5.9 Rebars

 It shall be ensured that only tested/approved grade of steel bars are

used.

 Cutting and bending of rebar shall be carried out as per approved bar
bending schedule.

 Cut lengths shall be grouped with respect to their mark numbers for
identification and shifting it from steel yard to the site.

 Rebar spacing shall be marked as per the drawings.

 Rebar network shall be properly fixed with binding wire.

 Chairs shall be provided at proper intervals to support the rebar

network.

 Spacer blocks of cement mortar shall be used to provide clear cover to

the reinforcement as mentioned in the construction
drawing/specifications. These blocks shall be placed at the bottom and
to the sides where necessary.

 Lap lengths shall be provided as per drawing / specifications.

5.10 Formwork

 Approved construction drawings shall be thoroughly studied for

concrete work carefully and design of formwork and false work shall be
prepared. The formwork shall be capable of withstanding loads
imposed when the concrete is placed.

 The formwork shall be laid out such that forms are positioned at
specified lines and that these are in plumb & level conforming to shape,
lines, elevations and dimensions of concrete shown on the drawings..

 End shall be braced adequately, to support all formwork so as to

maintain the desired position during and after placing the concrete and
also sufficiently tight to prevent mortar leakage.

 Before any reinforcement is placed, all forms shall be lubricated

properly to ensure ease of removal of forms and to avoid staining of the
concrete.

 Forms shall be positioned accurately to specified tolerance and secure

firmly with the anchors, bolts, inserts, supports, hangers, pipe sleeves,
drains, water stoppers etc. prior to pouring of the concrete.
