3. INTRODUCTION:

3.1. What is “CAD Standards”?

One area we tend to clump together is Standards. What I mean by that is that we tend to put "Drawing
standards", "Quality standards" and "CAD standards" together too often and in many ways they are
different.

Drawing standards = The look of the final product when it goes out the door. Is the product a professional
architectural piece worthy of the KMB title block?

Quality Standards = Is all the information correct? Can project be built/constructed well from these documents?
(This includes accuracy.)

CAD Standards = The method by which the drawings are produced. This will cost us extra money/grief/man
hours if not done correctly the first time?

That being said:

Quality Standards are the #1 priority and should always come first.

Drawing Standards is the #2 priority as it's a direct reflection on our company and the image it projects to the
public. High quality drawings often bring back more business (since accuracy of Quality Standards is expected).

CAD Standards is the #3 priority as it's an internal function... but it still can be very important when it comes to
extra money/grief/man hours. BUT it's the least likely of the three to come back and affect you and it's the only
one you can handle internally. Quality and Drawing Standards effect clients (or management, production, etc) in
the outside world and can directly effect the revenue stream coming into the organization. No matter how good
our marketing department is, if our product is bad, then it’s bad. Word will get out and affect our bottom line. But
internal CAD standards can be enforced on a "company" level and proven with production benefits. If the bottom
line looks bad because of this then we can make internal changes to ease the problem. On the other hand,
almost nothing makes a client happy that's been burned by a bad product.

That's why we should focus on the original question which was "What is CAD Standards?" which is really much
different from the question of accuracy. You can be accurate without following CAD Standards (but not following
CAD standards could effect accuracy down the line and force further revisions... and cost.. then again, it might
not depending on the product and which CAD Standards are broken).

The purpose of this manual is to ensure a consistent quality of printed Drawings and to act as a guide for new
members of staff and outside consultants.

It is important to have consistency not only with printed Drawings but also within CAD files. Deadlines require a
spirit of teamwork and for members of the team to frequently work on several CAD files simultaneously. CAD
users within the Dept. will have learned many different approaches to producing a CAD file: a common discipline
therefore is required to enable different members of the Dept. to contribute to the same CAD file.

CAD and the use of PCs generally within the Construction Industry is a relatively recent discipline and continues
to evolve as Hardware and Software improves and as CAD users discover new efficiencies within each Software
package. This Manual therefore will be subject to frequent revision.

3.2. Roles & Responsibilities

The Standard will be maintained and modified by the CAD Manager. The CAD Manager shall be responsible for
any follow-on issues.

The CAD Manager shall be responsible for developing any custom tools or templates for use in AutoCAD that
will assist in the compliance with the Standard. These custom tools and templates will be developed, distributed,
updated and maintained by the CAD Manager.

The development and use of the CAD Standard and any tools or templates is not seen as an end all in itself. The
goal is to enhance productivity and share work among users and projects. To this end the process will never be
completed. The CAD manager shall continue to develop and enhance the use of the CAD tools that we use
every day.

4. GENERAL NOTES:

4.1. General Drawing Notes:

All drawing “sets” will use the “Sheet Set Manager”. See the “Sheet Set
Manager” section for more information on the use, and organization of CAD
files. See your CAD Manager with further questions.
All drawings will be purged upon drawing completion. It is recommended that
the drawings be zoomed to “extents” and left in “paper space” upon closing
the file. This decreases questions that may arise when the drawing file is
opened by another user. All annotation & dimensioning will be done in the
“paper space” layout in the drawing containing the given “view”. There will be
times where annotation or dimensioning will need to be done on a given
drawing and not in the actual “view”. Thus is the case of all detail drawings,
explained later. All title blocks, viewports and title block text will be done in
layout (or paper) space. Each layout within a drawing will be named
according to the drawing name, not the default “sheets” or “layout”, etc. This
is to aid with batch plotting, discussed later. All Viewports will be locked to
prevent any accidental tampering with the intended plotted scale. Any
entities within the CAD file MUST be on their respective layer. Under no
means will text be placed on a layer other than one designated as an
annotation layer, wall lines be placed on a layer other than one designated
as a wall layer and so on, following the layer naming conventions explained
below. These entities are to have their color and line type set to “bylayer”
wherever possible. This is to aid in creating an easy understanding of the
CAD file by fellow CAD Dept. workers as well as consultants outside of the
firm. All Plan views shall use letter designations (i.e. – A/Floor Plan, etc). All
Partial Plan views shall use number designations (i.e. – 1/Partial Floor Plan,
etc). All Building Section views shall use letter designations (i.e. – A/Building
Section, etc). All Wall Section views shall use number designations (i.e. –
1/Wall Section, etc). All Detail views shall use number designations (i.e. –
1/Typical Footing, 2/Typical Exterior Door Head, etc). Spreadsheet data will
4.2. General Line Type Notes:
be inserted using either the “Paste Special” option within AutoCAD or
Linetype scales can be handled several ways, & each CAD team member may have a preferred method for
handling this. However, when using differing linetypes or such KMB would prefer the use of the stock AutoCAD
linetypes, and the linetype scale of the line remain unchanged from the standard setting of “1”. The paper space
linetype scale (psltscale variable) will be set to “1”, and the drawing global linetype scale will be set to “1”. This
method simplifies the process, and assures easier editing of the drawing by other team members. There are
instances where some objects use a custom linetype, these linetypes can be found in the “KMB.lin” or
“CUSTOM.lin” files.

4.3. General Hatch Notes:

“Spanner”. Either of these methods is largely intuitive. See your CAD
Several custom hatch patterns have been developed, for use in KMB drawings. These custom hatch patterns
can be found on the file server. These custom patterns include, but are not limited to the following files -
“metalroof.pat”, “wood1.pat”, etc. Under no conditions will hatch patterns be exploded! All hatch work will be
located on a layer designated for hatch work, following the layer naming convention explained below.

4.4. Dynamic Block Notes:

KMB has developed an extensive dynamic block library to assure drawing consistency from one project to the
next. These blocks contain many features within each block, and when properly used will assist the CAD
Operator in maintaining CAD Standards compliance. When inserted correctly these blocks will plot at the correct
size, be the correct plotted line weight & be on the correct layer with the correct layer name. These blocks will be
inserted into the drawing in model space, and scaled to the correct size of the intended drawing scale. Each
block contains fully functioning attributes for each piece of editable text. Under no circumstances will these
blocks be edited by the CAD Operator unless given direct permission by the CAD Manager. Under no
circumstances will these blocks be exploded. Several of these dynamic blocks have been created to use the full
functionality of the “Sheet Set Manager”. These special dynamic blocks contain “fields” that reference certain
data within the “Sheet Set” file and will automatically update changed references or drawing names when done
correctly. It is the CAD Operators responsibility to understand the functions of each dynamic block and the
intended use of each. See your CAD Manager with any questions about the proper use and functionality of all
dynamic blocks within the KMB Block Library. Under no circumstances is the CAD Operator to edit the blocks
contained within the KMB Block Library files without direct consent of his/her CAD Manager.

See images below for some of the blocks and their functionality.

containing the KMB Dynamic Blocks, Regular Blocks & Sheet Set Dynamic Blocks are located on the file server
under /Resources/KMB/CadStandards/. Under no circumstances are these files to be altered in any way. The
files will be updated by the CAD Manager as these blocks continue to be revised & modified. KMB recommends
the CAD Operator create a “Tool Palette” containing these blocks. The KMB team has created a “Tool Palette”
containing these blocks that can be imported into a new installation of AutoCAD. This “Tool Palette” will link to
the blocks in these CAD files and automatically update should the blocks contained within the files be updated,
assuring that the CAD Operator is using the most current version. Under no circumstances should the CAD
Operator copy these files to their local machine, or use the blocks contained within from any folder other than the
designated KMB Cad Standards folder on the file server. This is to assure that all KMB team members are using
the same files and blocks as well as the most current version. See your CAD Manager with any questions
regarding “Tool Palettes”, their creation or their usage.

5. CAD FILE TYPES:

There are several different types of files used to generate Construction Document output from AutoCAD. These
files, when used properly, will expedite the creation and modification of all drawings in the set.

NOTE: Once the file folders have been created and files generated, the CAD files DO NOT move. The yare not
moved to new folders when there is a change in project phase from SD, DD, CD or As-Built. When you move
from one phase of a project to the next you ARCHIVE a copy of the files and folders under the “Issue” folder.

5.1. XREF (Background) Files:

XREF files are the basis for all design work. They include the “model” representation of all construction elements
in a project, including plan, elevation and section information that delineates what will be built. The general rule
is that anything you see at the site after construction will be placed in this type of drawing. All XREF files are
drawn full scale in Model Space. No Paper Space elements shall exist in this file. XREF files will be directly
referenced to Sheet files. XREF files shall be located in the correct subfolder, plans in the “Plans” folder, Details
in the “Details” folder, Sections in the “Section” folder and so on.

5.2. Border Files (Title Blocks):

The Border File is drawn full size in Model Space. This drawing is the KMB Drawing Border or Title Block, it
contains all of the project and client information displayed along the edge of each drawing. The Border File is
Xrefed into Paper Space on the individual Sheet Files at a base point of 0,0.

5.3. Sheet Files:

The Sheet File shall be used to generate plots, one per Sheet File. Each Sheet File will represent only one
contract drawing. There will be NO multiple generations of plots from one Sheet File. Sheet Files will reference
XREF Files as well as Border Files.

5.4. Image Files:

Image Files are raster images generated to attach to CAD files for display. Images may be digital photos or
other items needed as key maps, job photos, etc. images are placed into a Photos folder and Xrefed into the
Sheet File. They may also be Xrefed into the Model File as needed.

5.5. Detail Sheets and Files:

The Detail Files contain all the standard details to be displayed on the Detail Sheets. All Details shall be drawn
as an individual drawing file. All Detail Files shall be drawn at full scale with all entities residing in Model Space.
All Detail Files shall reside in the “Details” subfolder of the project folder.

8. SHEET SET MANAGER:

This section will attempt to explain the intended use of the AutoCAD “Sheet Set Manager”.

The Sheet Set file will be named according to the project name and saved in
the project “current drawings” folder. Thus the “Sheet Set” file for a project
named “KMB-Remodel” would be named “KMBRemodel.dst”.
The files in the “sheet list” will be named according to the sheet name of the
drawing, with the sheet number used in the “number” entry, following the
KMB File Name / Sheet Name system discussed below. Details will be
drawn in model space with all annotation done in model space using a “text
style” or “dimension style” scaled for the intended plot scale of the final
drawing. The “KMB Master Template.dwg” file has been set up with these
text & dimension styles already in it. All “sheet views” will be named
according to the drawing name. Plan views will not contain annotation in the
x-ref. All annotation for plan sheets will be done in paper space. This will
allow the same x-ref to be used for separate sheets at varied scales without
having annotation scaling issues. The “Sheet Set” file will use the following
settings:
Model View = project “Current Drawings” folder. Label Block for Views =
“Drawing Title(P:\5 -Resources\KMB\CadStandards\SheetSet
DynamicBlocks.dwg)” Callout blocks = “Detail Bubble – Wall Section((P:\5
-Resources\KMB\CadStandards\SheetSet DynamicBlocks.dwg)”
“Section Marker(P:\5 -Resources\KMB\CadStandards\SheetSet
DynamicBlocks.dwg)”

8.1. Sheet Set Manager – Usage And Theory –

For those unfamiliar with the AutoCAD Sheet Set Manager, this section will attempt to bring you up to speed on
how it works, how to set up a new sheet set and why we use it.

(Excerpt from Lynn Allen’s article “Keep All Your Project's Eggs in One Basket”)
The Sheet Set Manager The goal of SSM (Sheet Set Manager) is not to make your life more complicated
--quite the contrary. SSM wants to help you be more organized, keep track of all those pesky files for you, help
you put them in the right folders. Using SSM isn't a change in process -- you'll still do things the way you've
done them in the past -rather it is a tool to make that process much easier and more efficient. Instead of
worrying about numerous files that make up a project, you will now worry about just one file: the sheet set.

So what can we do with the SSM? The SSM can track all files associated with a given project. It can help us
build our sheets. It can help us automate plotting tasks into a single mouse click. It can help us automate detail
and drawing title callouts and revise them globally throughout the entire Sheet Set(SS). It can help us organize
all of the data within a SS for quicker access, easier tracking and better productivity.

The dialog box to
Cad Standards May, 2009

From the image above, you can see a list of the things we can do within the SS. So let’s look at how we create a
new SS. From the pull-down list at the top of the SSM, choose “New Sheet Set”.

The photo to the left shows the pull-down and the “New Sheet Set”
option highlighted. Clicking on this will bring up the “Sheet Set Wizard”
dialog box. The steps are rather simple from this point on. Simply
choose to create your new SS “From an example drawing”, click next
and browse for the “KMB Sheet Set Template.dst” located in the CAD
Standards folder on the network, click next and fill in the SS properties.

the left shows the SS properties.

This is where all the SS information will reside.
Several items within the drawings, title block and cover
sheet will pull data from these options using
Fields. The options for the “Label Block for Views” and
the “Callout Blocks” shall point to the “SheetSet
DynamicBlocks.dwg” file located in the KMB CAD
Standards folder on the network. If used properly, the
Template file used to create your new SS will already
have these options filled in. The “Sheet
Creation” setting shall point to the “KMBSSM-
Template.dwt” located in the CAD Standards folder on the
network. It is the CAD Tech’s responsibility to
assure that the options for each SS are properly
completed using the settings discussed above.
Once the new SS is created, these settings can be changed by simply right-clicking on the SS name within the
SSM and choosing “Properties”. This will open up the dialog box shown above. This will be the method used for
tracking project phases and dates. The KMB Title Block has been designed to pull this information from the
information inserted in the dialog box shown above.

Once created, adding new sheets to your SS is as simple as right-clicking on the SS name and choosing “New
Sheet”. This should open a dialog box similar to the one on the right where you will give your new sheet a
sheet number, a sheet name and a file name. The sheet file name shall use the naming
KMB
design groups, inc. p.s.
828 -7th Avenue S.E. Olympia, Washington 98501 360-352-8883

convention discussed in the “Drawing Index” section of this manual. You can rename any sheet or “view” within
a SS by right-clicking on the sheet or view name and choosing “Rename & Renumber”.

Once your new sheet is created, you can populate it with drawings by
simply dragging the drawing from the SSM “Model Views” tab onto
the open drawing sheet. The image to the right shows a detail being
drug to the sheet. If your SS properties were done correctly, this will
create an xref of the detail in your new sheet, create a viewport for
you (viewport scale can be set by right-clicking before placing it on
the sheet & picking the scale from the list) and place a view label
block using the KMB Standards block. The name and number of the
drawing will need to be set using the Rename & Renumber method
discussed above by right-clicking on the name of the view from the
SSM “Sheet Views” tab. It is the CAD Tech’s responsibility to assure
the viewport and drawing title are on the correct layer (“cad model
viewports” & “a-anno-title”, respectively), this is not something the
SSM will do for you. See the “Dynamic Blocks” section of this manual
for any questions about their usage or functions.

See your CAD Manager with any questions regarding the Sheet Set
Manager and/or its usage.

As discussed, several information items within the drawing set have been designed to utilize the “Sheet Set
Manager”. These include, but are not limited to, the project phase and project number located on the Title Block.

discussed below.
Each drawing will have a “Page Setup” prepared using the intended plot
settings. The purpose of this is to introduce the “Batch Plotting” feature within
AutoCAD found in the “Publish” command. This will give the CAD team
member the capability to not only plot several drawings at once, but also plot
multi-sheet .DWF files and multi-sheet .PDF files as well. For information on
how to accomplish this, see your CAD Manager or the AutoCAD manual.
KMB prefers the page setup utilize the “Display Plot Styles” option. This is to
assure a uniform look to each CAD file when opened by any team member.
Whenever possible, the plot settings will be saved under the “page setup
name” within the “plot” window, using a name that describes the plotter &
paper size, IE: “KMB 11x17 Lazerjet5000”, etc. This aids in the “Batch
Plotting” feature discussed above. When using the Sheet Set Manager for
“Batch Plotting”, it is recommended that the CAD Operator use the “Publish
Dialog” box, not the “Publish Using Page Setup Overrides” option. KMB has
11.1. PEN TABLE SETTINGS:
found that using the “Page Setup Overrides” option introduces errors and
KMB uses the “KMB-standard.ctb” for plotted drawings. The following table lists the pen settings for the colors
referenced above. This table is included as a reference only and the pen settings are not to be altered. A
complete list of each pen in the pen table has been developed; see your CAD Manager for the location of this
file.
Pen number lost plots. See your CAD Manager with any questions regarding this.
