Career Peer Advisor Program - Career Center

Purpose:
To provide selected students with a professional development opportunity relative to their future career
through peer advising. Students will gain firsthand training in specific areas of career services including
resume and cover letter writing and employer recruiting. This is a voluntary leadership position within the
CLACS Career Center. All training sessions and work will qualify for volunteer service hours.

Selection process:
1. Resumes and cover letters will be accepted until August 15, 2018 through this link. Resumes and
cover letters will be scored according to the rubrics provided in Handshake’s resources section. Cover
letter should specifically address candidate’s desire to participate in this program.
2. Candidates will be interviewed prior to August 31, 2018 for fall 2018 positions.

Primary responsibilities:
• Assist with walk-in & walk-up services including providing referrals, resources, and resume critiques.
• Support career events including Career & Internship Fairs, employer on-campus recruiting, and
workshops.
• Provide scripted classroom & RSO presentations on career services.
• Attend Career Center Advisory Council meeting once a semester.

Required qualifications:
• Must be a junior level class standing or above with a declared academic major
• Cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher and maintain a 2.80 at all times
• Must be able to commit to 4 hours per week for the full academic year
• Have a personal commitment to professional development
• Outgoing personality; excellent verbal and written communication skills
• Understands the scope of the position; is conscientious and comfortable making referrals
• Attention to detail with excellent time management
• Ability to work independently and as part of a collaborative team
• Is attentive and able to manage multiple tasks efficiently
• Serves as an ethical and positive representative of self, the CLACS Career Center, and Ferris State
University.

Preferred qualifications:
• Previous employment experience
• Possess a strong interest in personnel management or career services
• Current membership in a Professional Student Organization

Mandatory group training:


Career Peer Advisors will be required to attend mandatory training including videos, research, phone
calls, and group workshops so as to provide their peers with the best career services available. The
schedule for these will be created during the summer and shared out appropriately. If you have any
