Brief on modern iron & steel industry in India

1875 - Kulti Works was established.


1907 - Tata Iron & Steel Company established.
1911 – Pig Iron first made in TISCO
1912 – First ingot of steel rolled in 1912 in TISCO. Plant designed to produce
125000 tons of saleable steel.
1918 – The Indian Iron & Steel Company Ltd started operation in Hirapur, West
Bengal. IISCO was set up to produce 3,65,000 tons of pig iron for exports. Later on
Kulti Works merged with IISCO.
1918 – Mysore Iron and Steel Works set up with a small charcoal blast furnace to
produce 20000 tons of pig iron per annum.
1937 – Steel Corporation of Bengal formed with initial ingot capacity of 2,70,000
tons per annum.
1953 – IISCO & Steel Corporation of Bengal amalgamated with combined capacity
of 4,50,000 tonnes of saleable steel per annum.
1954 – Hindustan Steel Limited set up initially to manage setting up plant at
Rourkela.
1957 – Supervision and control of Bhilai Steel Plant and Durgapur Steel Plant also
transferred to HSL.
1959 – Rourkela Steel Plant set up in Odisha in collaboration with German firms.
1959 – Bhilai Steel Plant set up in Chattisgarh with help of the Government of
erstwhile USSR.
1961 – 1MT phases of RSP & BSP commissioned.
1962 – Durgapur Steel Plant commissioned in West Bengal with British
consortium.
1964 – A new steel company Bokaro Steel Limited was incorporated.
1965 – Bokaro Steel Plant set up in Jharkhand with help of erstwhile USSR. The
plant had maximum indigenization in terms of material, know-how and
equipment compared to other plants.
1973 - A holding company Steel Authority of India Limited incorporated with an
authorized capital of Rs2000 crores for managing four integrated steel plants at
Rourkela, Bhilai, Durgapur and Bokaro. Special Steel Plants & Alloy Steel Plant at
Durgapur and Salem Steel Plant at Salem came to SAIL fold.
1976 – Essar Steel Ltd incorporated.
1978 – IISCO taken over as subsidiary of SAIL.
1979 – Jindal Steel & Power Limited incorporated
1989 – SAIL acquires Vishvesaraya Steel Plant at Bhadravati.
1992 – Rashtriya Ispat Nigam Ltd commissioned in 1992
1994 – JSW Ltd incorporated.
2006 – IISCO merged with SAIL.

SAIL:

SAIL is a Rs 60000 crore sales turnover company as of FY18. With 5 integrated


steel plants at Rourkela, Bhilai, Durgapur, Bokaro and Burnpur and special steel
plants at Durgapur, Bhadravati and Salem the company has achieved production
of 14.3MT saleable steel in 2017-18. Average Specific Energy consumption is 6.49
G.Cal/TCS and average Labour productivity is 349 TCS/Man/Year.

RINL:

RINL is a Rs 16500 crore sales turnover company as of FY18 with a saleable steel
production touching 4.5MT mark. Specific Energy consumption is 6.05 G.Cal/TCS
and labour productivity is 451 TCS/Man/Year.

TISCO:

TISCO is a Rs 59000 crore sales turnover company as of FY18
