Question 1

Plot Summary

Poirot, on vacation in Africa, meets the rich, beautiful Linnet Doyle and her new

husband, Simon. As accustomed, things are different between the grooms, and the moment

Linnet is discovered killed, Poirot must order a boatload of suspects to attain the murderer

before he (or she) kills again.

Characters.

1. Linnet Ridgeway Doyle

Many people envy her, and many said things like “I wish I could tear the clothes off her

back and stomp on her lovely, arrogant, self-confident face” (Christie p. 45). She took Doyle

from Jackie and is wedded to him.

2. Jackie

Energetic and excited to marry Simon Doyle.

3. Simon Doyle

Engaged to Jackie till Linnet got married to Simon, seized Simon from Jackie.

4. Hercule Poirot

A detective on holiday and witnessed Linnet’s murder hence has to solve the mystery.

5. Tim Allerton

A jewel thief at the end of the book working with his cousin, Joanna.

he recognized.

Settings

1. Wode Hall

It is a French restaurant that Hercule Poirot visits. While eating he sees Simon Doyle and

Jacqueline de Bellefort eating and behaving same as lovers do and Hercule Poirot hears a

dialogue they have on making money they want to be united.

3. Pearl-handled Pistol

In this place, Jackie draws out the pearl-handled small pistol before they embark the

vessel.

4. Wadi Halfa

It is a town in the Republic of Northern Sudan. Was a principal port on Nile River in the

19th century.

Theme.

Good versus Evil

Hercule Poirot has an inner conflict with evil versus good, so as the murders in the

story. Poirot's initial confrontation with this theme is when he was taking with Jacqueline de

Bellefort to attempt to influence her to suspend watching Simon Doyle and Linnet

throughout. An evidence in the book is, “She threatened to - well - kill us both" (Christie

Chapter 4, p. 79). They struggle with the evil and good towards each other as sail up the Nile

on the Karnak hence the killings.

Symbolism.

The Sun and the Moon

Both Simon and Jackie use this analogy to demonstrate Simon’s marriage to Linnet.

They describe it as "glamorous, beautiful Linnet looks like the sun while Jackie looks like

moon." (Christie p 85) Hence, when Simon became familiar with Linnet, Jackie left for him.

The sun described daylight and associated with accuracy, straightforwardness, strength.

Question 2.

As per the book Egyptian attractions are depicted with various gods and goddesses

(Christie p. 24). Many Egyptian deities had animal body parts, and the buildings foretell into

symbolism with various Egyptian synagogues.

Question 3.

According to Mangold, “when the British seized Egypt in 1882 they realized that they

ruled a Nile dependent society” (2016). So they knew that the economic determination,

economic advancement and political backbone of Egypt was on Nile. To develop their status

in Egypt, they had to demonstrate the ability to offer water. They knew that in the long run, it

was beneficial for London to have authority over the Nile.

Question 4.

There was no change in the plot and character identity between the two. However, the

film was entirely correct, hitting all the most significant occurrence. In the movie, Linnet

Ridgeway is too unfriendly and intelligent, Ms. Bowers, is had a hatred upon Linnet, unlike

in the book. Linnet Ridgeway and Mrs. Otterbourne are in a legal murder confrontation,

which is different from the book. Mrs. Van Schuyler, Tim Allerton, and Joana Southwood

were omitted.
