PROTECTING

YOUR CONTENT
101
Whether you're creating videos, music, documents, imagery, or another creation, things
can get hairy when you are creating, selling, or licensing your content. Use these tips to
help you protect your content at all stages of the creative process.

DISCUSS OWNERSHIP AND

RIGHTS WITH COLLABORATORS
Discussing ownership and permission to
license and/or sell your content
beforehand with your collaborators will
save you time, money and the
frustration of content-related issues
(e.g. lawsuits, arguments, loss of
income, etc.) in the future.

%
DOCUMENT OWNERSHIP
You can document each collaborator's
ownership and contribution to your
content using a simple split sheet
(create a split sheet for free using
Cosynd)!

DOCUMENT COSTS
Be sure to document all of the costs
associated with creating your content. If you
are paying a contractor, you can use a "work for
hire" agreement that clearly establishes your
ownership of the content and the scope and
terms of the work to be done.

REGISTER WITH COPYRIGHT

C
OFFICE
Provide a notice of copyright on your content
and register it with the Copyright Office.
Registration creates a public record of
ownership, is required to file an infringement
suit, and may allow you to collect a larger
sum if you win your suit compared to non-
registered works.

USAGE AGREEMENTS
Have written legal agreements in place
with anyone that will contribute to,
use, license, distribute, buy, or
represent your content in any way that
clearly outlines the permissions you
are granting.
