THE PEACE MESSENGER

Called to Receive and Share God’s Peace

AUGUST 2018

Grace and Peace to You dear sisters and brothers in Christ!

What do an empty raspberry pie tin, a rocket ship, rummage items, pancakes and an accordion have to do with
each other? These are all signs that point towards our involvement with helping our community celebrate
Poplar Fun Days. The final event of the weekend’s events is an outdoor worship service underneath the Poplar
Fun Days tent. We desire to be a part of our local community. If we believe that God meets us where we are –
that God is in fact ―circulating around the neighborhood,‖ not just off somewhere in heaven, then God will
surely meet us out in the Poplar Fun Days tent just as much as in our sanctuary.

Our first sign was a member bringing 6 raspberry pies to be sold for $10/pie with matching funds promised.
One thing let to another and this brought in $640 – miraculous! The next Sunday a Rocket Ship landed in our
church – creatively home built to help advertise our VBS GALACTIC STARVEYORS program which kicks

off after Poplar Fun Days.

Our third sign is rummage items flowing into the church and all the help needed to pull this rummage sell off
during Poplar Fun Days. Our fourth sign is the pancakes we will serve on Sunday of Poplar Fun Days. We
started this last year and meeting with success we expanded an extra hour and even pushed back the worship
start time from 09:00 to 10:00am.!

Our 5th sign is a member sharing their rediscovered talent of playing the accordion for our Sunday worship
service. Our 6th sign is the work we will do to help tear down the Poplar Fun Tent after our worship service
because that is the help our local community needed--- our 3rd year helping. God has promised to meet us
where we are at. Come let us worship the Triune God on Sunday, August 5th, 10:00am – you guessed it! At
the Poplar Fun Days Tent! Blessings Grow, Pastor Donna

Mindfulness Walking
“Do not worry about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your
requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your
hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus”. Philippians 4: 6-7

We hope everyone is taking advantage of these beautiful summer days by going for walks. We encourage
you to make your walking even more healthy by being mindful. Mindfulness means being more fully aware
of experiences in the present moment. Often when we walk we separate movement from our thoughts. Our
bodies do one thing while our minds race in another direction altogether often making to-do lists or stressing
about work or family.

Mindful walking is an opportunity to be fully present in what our body is doing. We can be mindful of our
breath, of how our bodies feel, of how our bodies respond to the environment, of how our thoughts take form
and to bring them back to the bodily experience rather than watching them race off.

We can mindfully choose how to bring our thoughts toward supporting health in body and spirit as we walk
with a meditative focus. A brief devotional time before a walk can provide the focus to center our minds as
we walk and open up space where God’s healing presence may become clear.

Use these tips for mindful devotional walking.

1. Begin with a brief devotional time using your chosen devotional or text. As you read the day’s reflection,
settle on a word or phrase from the Scripture verse or the reflectional passage. Make this your focal point as
you walk.
2. Pray and invite God’s presence into your mindful walk, asking God to clear your mind and spirit and open
up space for divine communion. You might want to jot down your day’s focal point to carry with you as you
walk.
3. While you walk, practice mindfulness. Allow your senses to help you be fully present in the moment and
not carried off by the cares of the day. Feel and notice the small experiences around you so that they might be
gateways to a larger awareness of God’s healing presence.
4. If you find your mind wandering to your to-do list or your worry list, bring your mind back to the focal
point you chose from the daily devotional time. If you wrote it down, this is a good time to look at it again
and remember why you chose it.
5. At the end of your walk, reflect on what you noticed as you walked that calmed you, brought you joy,
connected you to God, or provided positive perspective on circumstances that might have been weighing you
down. Consider keeping a journal where you write down one sentence each day of your awareness of God
from your walk.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION FOR MEDICARE BENEFICIARIES WITH LIMITED INCOME

DID YOU KNOW there are programs available to help pay for your Medicare costs? Medicare Savings
Programs assist people with Medicare who have limited income and resources. If eligible, your Medicare
Part B premium would be paid for you and you would automatically qualify for low cost prescriptions. That
savings would be over $100 per month! Another program known as “Extra Help” assists qualified
individuals with their prescription drug costs. If you or someone you know is on Medicare and struggling to
make ends meet, contact Brenda Kohel, Elder Benefit Specialist to learn more!

More Parish Nurse News: The parish nurses are now selling Kwik Trip car wash cards in addition to
Kwik Trip and Holiday gas cards. You can get 5 Ultimate $10 car washes for $40. These cards are a great gift
for the hard-to-buy-for people in your lives.

The Peace Parish Nurses are starting a bereavement card ministry to provide comfort and
support to people in our congregation whose immediate family members have died. Cards
will be sent at the time of death, at 3-month intervals and at special times such as the loved
one’s birthday or wedding anniversary during the first year following a death of a spouse,
parent, child, or sibling. An appropriate Care Notes® pamphlet will be sent with the card.
We recently applied for and received a $150 mini-grant from Northern Waters Parish Nurse
Ministry to start the card ministry. We welcome people to be part of this special ministry.
Let Jan Stevens know if you want to be involved. Also makes us aware of congregation
members whose loved ones have died.
