minutes:

4. Mitigating
Circumstances: HNC Mechanical Engineering

Ross Milligan still needs to hand in his work. His work commitments
makes it difficult to hand in assignments on time. It was agreed by the
Assessment Board that these are acceptable mitigating circumstances.

The new date of 30th August 2018 was agreed for Ross to submit his
work.

5. Student
withdrawals: There have been four confirmed withdrawals from HNC: Charlie
Barnes; Graham Lee Sean Plimley and Dan Smith. These will be
reflected on both Pearson and College systems.

6. Student
Examination The Assessment Board read through and confirmed the marks
Marks: presented.

Marks are held centrally by the course team in their own spreadsheet.
The team have been using Markbook for courses up to Level 3, but it
was recommended that they use it for the BTEC courses to keep
information centrally.
A pre-meeting to this Final Assessment Board was held by the course
team on 18th July 2018.
HNC Exit Awards – Second year.

Mechanical Engineering
Five achievements.

Electrical and Electronic Engineering

Six achievements.

There are three none-completers, including one student from the

previous year, carried over who did not complete.

General Engineering –
Two students are expected to complete, but these can’t be claimed
until work has been moderated by the EV in September.
A letter is to be written to Mark Rushforth. – he has completed and
handed in his work, but can’t be claimed until September following the
second upcoming EE visit.

HNC Operations Engineering

There is one student, Stephen John Davies, who is still handing in work
who has completed but is expected to pass when he does. He is the
only person in the Operations Engineering cohort so it needs to be
checked whether this needs to be moderated.

HND Operation Engineering

There are two students (carried over from 2014-16 cohort) still
outstanding to be claimed. These were EV’d at the time, but more
work has since been submitted. These students will be claimed
following the EE visit and second Assessment Board (dates to be
confirmed) in September.

It was noted that these students need to be looked at by MIS on

central systems, to clear up some administrative issues.

HNC Pass/Proceed – First year

It was agreed that all remaining students are eligible to continue to the
second year of their HNC.

Points to note:

It was noted that the team use their own spreadsheet to record
students’ marks. The team have been using Markbook for courses up
to Level 3, but it was recommended that they use it for the BTEC
courses to keep information centrally.
7. Student referrals/
non-submissions : Please see withdrawals – students who have not submitted work with
no communication have been withdrawn from the course.

8. IV process: The EE was happy with the IV process.

9. External Visit / Feedback Date: 4th June 2018

Examiner
comments: Essential Actions

Please provide the EE with a copy of the minutes of the Assessment

Board.

Ascertain the intentions of students shown as registered on

programmes MK 960, MK 961 and MK 954 and
close registration, claiming unit certification, for students who do not
intend to complete their qualification.

Recommendations

Review the contextualisation of higher-grade descriptors to ensure

appropriateness and clarity.

Submit assignment briefs for the current QCF and upcoming RQF
programmes to the Assignment Checking Service to confirm fitness-for
purpose before issue to students.

Points to note:

An action plan, with responses, has been created and submitted to the
External Examiner.

10. Any other

business: A meeting will be arranged to rationalise the amount of differing BTEC
Engineering courses.

It needs to be clarified by the EE how to effectively deliver the (running

out) QCF and the new RQF frameworks alongside each other,
particularly at transition from HNC – HND Level.

Another set of SRF forms will need to be requested from Exams.
