Modern Technology

Modern technology is simply an advancement of old technology, the impact of technology in

modern life is unmeasurable, we use technology in different ways and sometimes the way we
implement various technologies ends up harming our lives or the society we leave in. What we
call modern technology is technically not so new in most cases. For example, mobile phone
technology has evolved with years, nowadays we use smartphones which have been an
advancement of an ordinary mobile phone.
Technology is applied to the roles each individual fulfils during life. We use technology on a
daily basis to accomplish specific tasks or interests. Modern Technology increases human
capabilities and this technology has evolved with years. What used to work before, might not
be working now, it must have got old or got replaced by modern technology. Let’s look at a
simple example in Transportation technology, this technology has evolved with years, we used
to use steam powered trains now those have been replaced by electronic trains which move
faster than steam trains.
Modern technology simplifies life in so many ways and everyone defines technology in their
own way. To some people, it means complicated electronic devices. To others, it means the
source of the radical changes that are happening in all phases of life. Others define technology
as science applied to practical purposes. Some people fear to use technology while others see
it as the source of longer and more complete lives. Below I have listed detailed points on
Advantages and Disadvantages of Modern Technology:

Advantages of modern technology:

1. Easy Access to information: It has become very easy to get access to relevant
information at any time anywhere. This has been possible because of modern
technologies like broadband internet. Lots of data is being published and indexed
online, sites like Wikipedia and YouTube have great original content which can be used
in research or entertainment. Information is power and those who find information and
use it well always succeed. With smart gadgets like the iPad, iPhone, galaxy tablet,
users can easily have access to information through these smart gadgets because they
use the internet. So a user on a train can easily read breaking news while traveling, they
can also buy and sell stocks while in the bedroom using the internet.

2. Improved communication: Communication is like water to life. We cannot develop

without communication. Modern technology has blessed us with advanced
communication technology tools. These can include e-fax machines, electronic mail,
mobile phones, video conferencing, instant text messaging applications, social
networking applications. All these modern communication technology tools have
simplified the way humans and businesses communicate. I can easily talk to my relative
overseas using a mobile phone or video chatting services like Skype.

3. Convenience in Education: Learning is a process and it is part of our daily lives.

Modern technology has made it simple for students to learn from anywhere through
online education and mobile education. Also, students now use modern technology in
classrooms to learn better. For example, students use iPads to share visual lessons and
examples with peers in the classroom. This has made learning more convenient and fan.
Also new modern educational technologies support individual learning which gives a
chance to students to learn on their own with no need of tutors.

Disadvantages of modern technology:

1. Job Loss: Modern technology has replaced many humans; robots are doing the jobs
which used to be done by humans. Many packing firms have employed robots on
production lines to increase production and efficiency, this is good news for businesses
because it helps them make more money and serve customers in time, but it is bad news
to employees because they get replaced by a robot.
2. World destruction weapons: Modern technology has been the main aid in the increasing
and endless wars. It aids the manufacturing of modern war weapons which will require
testing. So when these weapons get into the hands of criminals, they will use them for
their selfish reasons.

The general effects of pollutants are as follows

1. Air Pollution
Air pollution is the contamination of air by smoke and harmful gases, mainly
oxides of carbon, sulphur, and nitrogen. (And maybe by that smelly uncle.) Some
examples of air pollution include:
 Exhaust fumes from vehicles
 The burning of fossil fuels, such as coal, oil, or gas
3

 Harmful off-gassing from things such as paint, plastic production, and so on

 Radiation spills or nuclear accidents
Air pollution is linked to asthma, allergies and other respiratory illnesses. You can more
about how the environment affects human health here.
2. Land Pollution
Land pollution is the degradation of the Earth's surface caused by a misuse of resources
and improper disposal of waste. Some examples of land pollution include:
 Litter found on the side of the road
 Illegal dumping in natural habitats
 Oil spills that happen inland
 The use of pesticides and other farming chemicals
 Damage and debris caused from unsustainable mining and logging practices
 Radiation spills or nuclear accidents
Land pollution is responsible for damage done to natural habitat of animals, deforestation
and damage done to natural resources, and the general uglying up of our communities.
(So stop being a litterbug, eh?)
3. Light Pollution
Light pollution is the brightening of the night sky inhibiting the visibility of stars and
planets by the use of improper lighting of communities. Some examples of what causes
light pollution:
 Street lamps that shine light in all directions, instead of with a hood to point light
downward toward the street.
 Extra, unnecessary lights around the home
 Cities that run lights all night long
Light pollution uses more energy (by shining more light up instead of down, meaning you
need brighter bulbs for the same amount of light), may affect human health and our sleep
cycles, and most importantly, corrupts our kids telescopes and their curiosity. (I grew up
in a city. My first no-light night in the country blew my mind. Let's not make that such a
rare occasion!)
4. Noise Pollution
Noise pollution is any loud sounds that are either harmful or annoying to humans and
animals. Some examples of noise pollution:
 Airplanes, helicopters, and motor vehicles
 Construction or demolition noise
4

 Human activities such as sporting events or concerts

Noise pollution can be disruptive to humans' stress levels, may be harmful to unborn
babies, and drives animals away by causing nervousness and decreasing their ability to
hear prey or predators.
5. Thermal Pollution
Thermal pollution is the increase of temperature caused by human activity. A few
examples of this include:
 Warmer lake water from nearby manufacturing (using cool water to cool the plant and
then pump it back into the lake)
 Included in thermal pollution should also be the increase in temperatures in areas with
lots of concrete or vehicles, generally in cities
These kinds of environmental pollution can cause aquatic life to suffer or die due to
the increased temperature, can cause discomfort to communities dealing with higher
temperatures, and will affect plant-life in and around the area.
6. Water Pollution
Water pollution is the contamination of any body of water (lakes, groundwater, oceans, etc).
Some examples of water pollution:
 Raw sewage running into lake or streams
 Industrial waste spills contaminating groundwater
 Radiation spills or nuclear accidents
 Illegal dumping of substances or items within bodies of water
 Biological contamination, such as bacteria growth
 Farm runoff into nearby bodies of water
These kinds of environmental pollution are linked to health issues in humans, animals and
plant-life. You can read more about how the environment is affecting our health here.

The methods of waste disposal

Industrialized nations are grappling with the problem of expeditious and safe waste disposal.
Non-biodegradable and toxic wastes like radioactive remnants can potentially cause
irreparable damage to the environment and human health if not strategically disposed of.
Though waste disposal has been a matter of concern for several decades, the main problem has
been taking massive proportions due to growth in population and industrialization, the two
major factors that contribute to waste generation. Though some advancement is being made in
5

waste disposal methods, they are still not adequate. The challenge is to detect newer and
unhazardous methods of waste disposal and put these methods to use.
1. Preventing or reducing waste generation: Extensive use of new or unnecessary products
is the root cause of unchecked waste formation. The rapid population growth makes it
imperative to use second hand products or judiciously use the existing ones because if not,
there is a potential risk of people succumbing to the ill effects of toxic wastes. Disposing of the
wastes will also assume formidable shape. A conscious decision should be made at the personal
and professional level to judiciously curb the menacing growth of wastes.
2. Recycling: Recycling serves to transform the wastes into products of their own genre
through industrial processing. Paper, glass, aluminium, and plastics are commonly recycled. It
is environmentally friendly to reuse the wastes instead of adding them to nature. However,
processing technologies are pretty expensive.
3. Incineration: Incineration features combustion of wastes to transform them into base
components, with the generated heat being trapped for deriving energy. Assorted gases and
inert ash are common by-products. Pollution is caused by varied degrees dependent on nature
of waste combusted and incinerator design. Use of filters can check pollution. It is rather
inexpensive to burn wastes and the waste volume is reduced by about 90%. The nutrient rich
ash derived out of burning organic wastes can facilitate hydroponic solutions. Hazardous and
toxic wastes can be easily be rid of by using this method. The energy extracted can be used for
cooking, heating, and supplying power to turbines. However, strict vigilance and due diligence
should be exercised to check the accidental leakage of micro level contaminants, such as
dioxins from incinerator lines.

4. Sanitary Landfill: This involves the dumping of wastes into a landfill. The base is prepared
of a protective lining, which serves as a barrier between wastes and ground water, and prevents
the separation of toxic chemicals into the water zone. Waste layers are subjected to compaction
and subsequently coated with an earth layer. Soil that is non-porous is preferred to mitigate the
vulnerability of accidental leakage of toxic chemicals. Landfills should be created in places
with low groundwater level and far from sources of flooding. However, a sufficient number of
skilled manpower is required to maintain sanitary landfills.
Serious research has been undertaken to publish this content, so you're in the right place. I love
technology, I believe embracing its potential for personal, business or educational advancement
will pave the way forward for us all.
