Verbal sentence cannot have two doers (Seq # 105)

Consider an English sentence ‘The men went’. Men is the plural of man. In Arabic
it is ‫ﺭ ِﺟــﺎ ٌﻝ‬. ّ ِ ‫ﺫَﻫَــﺒُــﻮﺍ‬. This is because in
ِ It is not correct to say a verbal sentence ‫ﺍﻟﺮ َﺟــﺎ ُﻝ‬
the verb the first doer ‫ ﻭ‬is present and then noun ‫ﺍﻟﺮ َﺟــﺎ ُﻝ‬ ّ ِ is ٌ‫ــﻮﻉ‬ ْ ُ‫ــﺮﻓ‬
ْ ‫ َﻣ‬representing the
second doer. In order to avoid such a confusing situation having two doers,
singular form of the verb should be used in the above verbal statement. The
correct verbal sentence will be ‫ﺍﻟﺮ َﺟــﺎ ُﻝ‬ َ ‫ﺫَﻫ‬. Alternatively, we can also construct a
ّ ِ ‫َــﺐ‬
nominal sentence as below.

‫ﺍﻟﺮ َﺟــﺎ ُﻝ ﺫَﻫَــﺒ ُْﻮﺍ‬

ِّ

ّ ِ is the subject (ُ ‫ )ﺍﻟ ُﻤ ْﺒﺘَﺪَﺃ‬and ‫ ﺫَﻫَــﺒ ُْﻮﺍ‬is the complete verbal

In the above sentence ‫ﺍﻟﺮ َﺟــﺎ ُﻝ‬
sentence acting as a predicate to the subject ‫ﺍﻟﺮ َﺟــﺎ ُﻝ‬. ّ ِ Just to understand more
clearly, let us correct another verbal sentence as below.

Example

“Those who believe said”.

Incorrect verbal sentence is ‫ﻗَــﺎﻟُ ْﻮﺍ ﺍﻟﱠ ِﺬﻳْــﻦَ ﺁ َﻣﻨُﻮﺍ‬

Correct verbal sentence is ‫ﻗَــﺎ َﻝ ﺍﻟﱠ ِﺬﻳْــﻦَ ﺁ َﻣﻨُﻮﺍ‬

Alternative Nominal sentence is ‫ﺍﻟﱠ ِﺬﻳْــﻦَ ﺁ َﻣﻨُﻮﺍ ﻗَــﺎﻟُ ْﻮﺍ‬
