Section 6: Teacher Candidate Teacher Interview Video

Teacher Candidate Interview Video

In this section I provide a screencast interview video which includes information about

my Project Portfolio and Weebly website. The Teacher Interview Video was an excellent

learning experience. The interview questions were thought-provoking and encouraged me to

think about my education. I considered my Early Childhood Education Diploma, Bachelor of

Arts Degree and Masters of Science in Education program. I looked at all the artifacts from my

schooling and in particular the artifacts I have included in my Portfolio Project. I evaluate my

artifacts in relation to what I have learned as an educator and how they make me an effective and

valuable teacher. I considered my experience teaching students from newborns to the age of

twelve. I looked at the curriculum and professional standards and how they apply to the teaching

profession. In order to answer the interview questions I assessed my education and experience.

The Teacher Interview Video experience allows me to use the softwares screencast-o-

Matic, Weebly Website and Power point. Having the opportunity to make a video where I show

my artifacts and my abilities as a teacher, gives me experience in talking about myself, and will

help me when I go for interviews as a teacher candidate. Watching my-self in the video was

difficult. I scrutinized my mannerisms and the way I say “like” a lot. I videotaped myself many

times, before a video was acceptable for me to show on the Weebly website. I feel videotaping

my self was a wonderful experience because it allows me to see how others would view me.

Especially as a new teacher candidate looking for employment, it is crucial to be the best I can at

an interview. This experience helps me improve my image to parents, students, schools and the

school hiring committees. This was an incredible experience that gave me insight into how I

present myself and show my abilities as a teacher.

Teacher Candidate Interview Questions & Responses

In my Teacher Interview Video, I answer five interview questions provided by Medaille

College to show my experience and knowledge as a new teacher candidate. The following are

questions and my answers in brief as new teacher candidate.

Briefly share a little about your background experiences that have led you to choose a career in

education?

 I have an Early Childhood Education Diploma.

 I have worked as an Early Childhood Educator for over ten years.

 I have experience teaching students from newborn to age twelve.

 I enjoyed teaching students and like the profession.

 I have working experience with planning, instruction and assessment in daycares and the

public school.

 Dr. Maria Montessori is a theorist that inspires me. She states the teacher is crucial in the

learning environment and should educate students when they are ready for learning. She

also states the teacher should guide the students in a positive way!

What have you learned in your teacher training program that will make you an excellent

classroom teacher and colleague?

 I learned to incorporate technology as in seen in my Weebly website. (Prezi, Padlet,

google Survey and YouTube videos)

 I learned to make Learner Accommodation and Culturally Responsive Teaching. (This

can be seen in my ELA Lesson Plan. I use Google Translate, Dual Language

Dictionaries, I provide students with the books discussed in class in their native language.
I give students flexible assessments so they may show their learning in their own way, in

fewer words or with picture.

Provide us with an example of a lesson you taught. How did you integrate it with other

curriculum areas, address the CCLS, technology, student engagement and motivation? What

were the results of the lesson?

 I created a math lesson plan for a grade two class.

 I set up five different centers for students to explore and learn. Center 1: On a mat, using

rocks with numbers, and sticks. Students will make analogue clocks. Center 2: Using the

iPad the students will play time games. Center 3: Using small black boards and chalk

students will draw clocks. Then draw a time that matches with the time written on a piece

of construction paper. Center 4: Matching game. Students will match digital time to

analogue time. Centre 5: Students will write an o’clock & digital times. Then they will

draw a picture of what they do at that time.

 This math lesson is cross-curricular with ELA/Writing standards. (Writing a sentence

about what the students did at a particular time.) It enhances gross-motor and fine skills.

( Students are moving around and pick up objects with a pincer grasp)

 The students are using Common Core: 2.MD.7 Measurement and Data: Tell and write

time from analog and digital clocks to the nearest five minutes, using am and pm. Also,

Canadian Curriculum: Grade 2: -Tell and write time to the quarter-hour, using

demonstration digital and analogue clocks.

 In this lesson plan I incorporate technology. Students use the timer on iPads to see how

long it takes them to spoon items from one bowl into another.
 I have set up five different activities in order to motivate and engage students. All

students had a preference for an activity

 The results of the lesson were very good. The students requested to have the activities

again and they were offered the second day. The learned time in various different ways.

How will your knowledge of the current trends in education inform you as an educator in our

district/board/school?

 In my opinion the current most exciting trend in education is technology in the

classroom. Technology helps the teacher prepare instruction, instruct students and assess

students. Also, technology helps students learn in an interactive and engaging manner.

 I use technology is the classroom in my lessons. In my Math Lesson I use iPads and in

my ELA Lesson students use technology to watch YouTube videos, and use Google

Translate for English Language Learners.

 I have learned about and used the softwares Prezi, Smore, Padlet and created a Weebly

website.

 I have also created an ABC App for students to learn how to write the alphabet letters.

 I enjoy teaching with technology and I feel it make learning more engaging for students

because as Marc Prensky states the students are “digital natives” due to being born in a

technology environment.

Why should we hire you instead of other applicants we have interviewed?

 I have 10 years of experience teaching students.

 I incorporate technology into my programing. (Lessons and I make apps for students.)

 I create engaging lessons that motivate students. ( Math lesson with 5 different centers)
 I participate in workshops that enhance my knowledge as a teacher. (I completed the

DASA workshop where I learned about The Dignity for All Students Act. This teaches

how to help students in bullying situations.)

Conclusion

The Teacher Interview Video experience allowed me to reflect on my education and

experience, in planning, instruction, assessment, learner accommodation, technology, culturally

responsive teaching, curriculum and professional standards and classroom management. The

experience allowed me to see myself as a capable new teacher who is effective, makes learning

meaningful, treats all students with dignity and takes incorporates curriculum and professional

standards when teaching.
