2011 AR 307 SURVEYING AND LEVELLING

Part A Answer all questions.


1. What is the principle of surveying.
2. Distinguish between direct and reciprocal ranging.
3. List out the advantages and disadvantages of plane table surveying.
4. Define (a) Datum (b) level surface.
5. Write short note on (a) Back sight and foresight (b) Change point (c) Bench mark.
6. Briefly mention the characteristics of contour.
7. What is GPS.
8. Mention the errors eliminated while measuring angles by repetition method.

Part B Answer any two from each question.
9. (i) A 20m chain was found after chaining 1200m to be 6cm too long. The same chain at
the end of days work after chaining a total length of 2100m was found to be 8cm too long.
What is the total correct distance chained if the chain was correct at the commencement of
work. (10 marks)
(ii)Explain in detail the working of a plannimeter. (10 marks)
(iii)What is resection method in plane table surveying? Explain in detail 3point problem
solution . (10 marks)
10.(i)Explain the various methods of contouring and discuss their merits and demerits.
(10 marks)
(ii)What do you mean by ‘Booking and reduction of levels’. Compare the methods that you
usually use. (10 marks)
(iii)The following staff readings were observed in sequence: 1.324 ,2.605, 1.385, 0.638,
1.655, 1.085, 2.125 and 1.555. The instrument was shifted after third and sixth readings.
The third reading was taken to an arbitrary bench mark of elevation 75.000.Find the RL of
all other points, using height of collimation method. (10 marks)

11.(i)Explain the principle and working of Total Station. (10 marks)


(ii)Explain the temporary adjustments of a theodolite. (10 marks)
(iii)Write in detail various methods of theodolite traversing. (10 marks)
