Foreword

E
ducation is very important for the
overall progress of the society and the
human wellbeing. In this modern era,
Asian countries do have a great potential in
providing affordable education to the local and
international students.

In Malaysia, there are more than 62 higher

education institutions (HEIs) including satellite
branches of the foreign universities that
offers biomedical and non-biomedical degree
programmes.

The AIMST University (AIMST) is the first private

university in the northern part of the Peninsular
Malaysia that offers various biomedical and non-
biomedical degree programmes. As founder of
the AIMST, I am really delighted; because, on
March 15, 2015, university is going to complete
fifteen (15) glorious years.

and to provide services for the wellbeing of the society and the humanity.”
In short time, AIMST has made a great
impact in terms of high quality in the
education industry. I am proud to tell you
that AIMST is well-equipped with the
‘state-of-the-art’ facilities for the teaching
and research in medical and non-medical
domains.
In order to grow further, we are putting-in-
efforts to enhance the quality of our various
biomedical and non-biomedical degree
programmes by ensuring that the courses
remains affordable for local and foreign
students.
Currently, AIMST receives about 53 -
57% extra applications (apart from the
quota given by the Ministry of Education)
from students for the admission in
biomedical degree programmes. However,
biotechnology degree programmes
and other degree programmes are also
becoming popular among the students.

PREFACE
A
s the AIMST University (AIMST)
is going to celebrate its fifteenth
(15th) anniversary on March 15,
2015, various thoughts and ideas for the
anniversary celebration came in my mind. In
this process, a thought of publishing a book
about the AIMST University was conceived.
When I shared it with Senior Professor
M. Ravichandran, Vice-Chancellor of the
AIMST University, he supported the idea of
publishing this book on the occasion of the
AIMST University’s 15th anniversary.

the AIMST University

T
he AIMST University is the first
private university in northern
Peninsular Malaysia. University is
registered with the Ministry of Higher
Education, Government of Malaysia, as a
tertiary educational institute under Sections
38 and 39 of the Private Higher Educational
Institutions Act of 1996. AIMST formally
began its operations on 30 October 2001,
coinciding with its registration with the
Department of Private Education under the
Ministry of Higher Education.
In-line with the vision of founder, the
AIMST University aims to be a premier
private university in the country and
region catering to the needs of needy
local and international students in
providing quality technical education at
an affordable fee. The curricula for most
of the degree programmes are in line with
the international standards. Each degree
programme covers all relevant components
to make students competent enough to
serve the industry in their respective areas
of expertise.
In general, most of the degree programmes
include computer training, writing and a
research component in order to prepare
students for work and to provide them
with the ability to apply technologies to all
aspects of their education. Admission to the
degree programmes requires the applicant
to meet minimally the prescribed grades in
the relevant subjects at the matriculation
(local or overseas) level or possess other
equal qualifications acceptable to the
AIMST University.

T
he circle formation of the overall Masterplan is a clear and strong image signifying
knowledge held in the greater circle of life. A crescent moon-kite form of the ‘wau’
sits balanced in the circle resulting in a harmonious whole.The circle is a universal form,
transcending all Malaysian races and religion and unifying them to a whole.

core reinforces the concept while creating a strong beginning to develop a “sense of place”

Theme Behind Architect’s Design
The heart of the circle is the academic core
with five radial fingers representing the 3
faculties and the Great Hall complex. The
circle as a unifying form signifies education
within the global context.
Crossing through the lakes, the initial focus
will be the Great Hall and administrative
complex, which will stand majestically at the
entrance of the campus. This central core
is to facilitate student interaction between
faculties, the cross fertilization of ideas and
instantly creating a strong identity for the
campus. The Great Hall is connected by
a ring of walkways, connecting students
within the campus to the other facilities.
To the north of the Great Hall sits the
Multimedia Library and Student Centre.

Multimedia Complex is the Medical Faculty
and the Engineering + IT Faculty.
The campus planning is first and foremost
oriented towards pedestrians, with walking
and cycling as the predominant forms of
movement on campus. The centralised
Academic and Administrative core facilitates
this. In addition, all faculties are within
a 10 minute (800m) walking diameter.
The student residencies are within a 15
minute (1000m) walking diameter from
the Academic Core. Automobile access is
located on the outer ring of the Academic
Core to minimize automobile intrusion, and satellite image of the AIMST University

l YB Dato’ Seri S.Samy Vellu in his
presidential address at MIC’s 5Ist General
Assembly announced MIED’s application
to the Government to set up a private
University in Kedah Malaysia.
2000
l YAB Dato’ Seri Syed Razak bin Syed Zain,
the Chief Minister of Kedah, officiated the
ground breaking ceremony for the
University’s permanent campus at
Semeling.
l YB Dato’s Seri S.Samy Vellu formally
announced at the 54th General Assembly
of MIC the approval for establishment of
the university from the Malaysian
Government and the alienation of a piece
of land by the Kedah State Government
for the same.
l MIED establishes a nevv company
Asian Institute of Medicine, Science &
Technology (AIMST) Sdn. Bhd. to set up
and operate the University and Tan Sri
Datuk Dr.K.Ampikaipakan as its Chairman
of the AIMST
2001
l AIMST established its interim campus
at Amanjaya in Sungai Petani, Kedah,
Malaysia
l Department of Private Education (IPS) the
Ministry of Education, Malaysia approved
the Memorandum and Articles of AIMST
Sdn.Bhd. This date is taken as the official
founding date of the University.
l The construction work of
the AIMST University’s new campus was
started formally at Semeling
l The National Accreditation Board (LAN)
approves the application of AIMST to
conduct its first course — Matriculation
(now renamed Foundation in Science).
l AIMST was registered as a private
University under the Private Higher

l IPS approved the start of the University’s
first undergraduate degree programme —

2003
l Ministry of Home Affairs approves the
application of AIMST to recruit international
students.

l IPS approved the application of AIMST to
start its first postgraduate programme, MSc
Biotechnology (by research)
2006
l AIMST secured a temporary certificate
of fitness for occupancy of its Semeling
Campus. 1st batch of students completed
their undergraduate degree programme
(Biotechnology) at AIMST.
2007
l The Ministry of Higher
Education, Malaysia approved elevation of
AIMST to university status.
l Minister of Higher Education,

l Public Service Department (PSD) approved
the granting of scholarships to AIMST
students. AIMST University becomes the
fifth private university accredited for PSD

l The first cohort of medical graduates
(Batch 1) joined the Ministry of Health as
Medical Officers.
l The first cohort Bachelor of Dental Surgery
graduated.
l The first batch of students from School of

l The first batch of AIMST business
students embarked on a student mobility

l The Faculty of Business and Management

AIMST’s astute corporate culture, the

Indeed, it gives me an immense pleasure to
share my experiences at AIMST. I have been
working as a faculty member in Faculty of
Pharmacy, AIMST University since March
2006. It is one of the premier private sector
universities in northern region, Kedah,
Malaysia. When I joined the university, it
was functioning on a private campus at
Amanjaya and then we moved to our own
campus at Semeling in April, 2007. It was
a great feeling for me to see a well-built,
beautiful greenery campus and with state
of art facilities carved a wonderful place to
work. The faculty of pharmacy was started
in August 2005 with an initial intake of
50 students. The first batch students were
successfully graduated in October 2010. Our
undergraduate programme was accredited
by Pharmacy Board of Malaysia in 2009 for
three years. Since its inception, the faculty of

When the Dental School first started at
Amanjaya Campus with its first batch of
dental students, there was only 5 teaching
staff. Then a couple of new Indian
graduates joined in .We had to work through
lunch hours to prepare teaching aids and
materials for the practical sessions, in order
to keep the students occupied with minimal
equipment and facilities. The junior staff had
to be trained and instructed as what and
how to teach. It was during those difficult
situations that emotional attachment to
the school has developed. We do have
wonderful facilities; however, I sincerely
hope that the dental school will keep the
momentum to add more cutting edge
facilities in years to come.

of Dentistry in providing leadership and

I was recruited to establish the Clinical
Skills Center at AIMST in 2007 after the
management had visited and seen that of
the Universiti Sains Malaysia, Kubang Kerian
that I pioneered. First time, when I visited
the university campus, I was enchanted by
the serenity and beauty of the university’s
new campus. I accepted instantaneously the
offer of employment at AIMST.
The task given to me was to establish
a Clinical Skills Center of international
standard at AIMST. This was achieved and
the center has now become one of the best
in Malaysia. Students who have been trained
in clinical skills and procedures have shown
proficiency in clinical skills prior to their ward
training. To enhance training, books and
materials have been produced in the unit to
enable firm students’ knowledge and skills.
Every year, 200 students are going through
training and have become the envy of
students from other universities. This is
evidenced by their performance during
ward training at the hospitals where they
demonstrate versatility in the performance

The AIMST University was started in the
year 2000 at Amanjaya, Sungai Petani. At
that time it was just a row of shop lots. The
environment for an institution was limited
for unlike other universities in Malaysia.
Enrolment was less; shortage of Facilities,
Lecturers, Lecture theatres at this initial
stage.
The new campus of the university is a
beautiful area of 240 hectors at the foot
of a hill. There are man-made and natural
unused mining pools within the compound.
The architects had made a wonderful job
creating beautiful buildings and well planned
campus. Now it can boast of its many
faculties including student’s hostel, staff
apartments and even bungalows for officials
and visitors to stay.
Students and their parents are impressed
to witness such a world class institution in
Kedah Darul Aman. Today, the university

I was the first Physics lecturer and the Head
of Science Department for the Foundation
in Science program. I was working as a part-
timer. I had the unique opportunity not only

also witness the transformation of AIMST

the health sciences, applied sciences,
management and social sciences. In 2006,
I stopped working as part-timer for AIMST

As a Dental Technologist, I join AIMST
University on January 2006. At that time
our campus was at Aman Jaya, Sungai
Petani. My first assignment was to set up
temporary dental laboratory, purchase
dental equipment and dental materials for
dental student (BDS) to start their practical
class. With the help of the Dean, AIMST
management and colleagues we manage
to complete the task in time. As one of
academic staff, I also teach them on dental
technology.
At the same time we initiated the process
to designing the new Dental Laboratory
at our present Main Campus at Semeling.
It was a major project which required
proper planning. With the support of
my colleagues and our management we
achieved in establishing a state of art
laboratory at our present campus. Now,
we have a world class dental laboratory
well equipped with most up to date dental
equipments.
It’s a great satisfaction for me to see dental
student fully utilized the facilities, where
they can acquire skill and knowledge in

I have the pleasure of working with AIMST
University since 2009. AIMST is aiming
to become a premier private university in
the country and region. I strongly believe
that we can achieve the university’s goals
if every staff works as a team. I am proud
to be a part of AIMST family. My area of
specialization is public health and obstetric
nursing. As an academician, the most that
excites me is nothing more than making
student understands the richness of
experience as a nurse. To me, a competent
nurse is to be able to function in multi-
professional roles to promote, maintain,
and restore health and wellness among
diverse individuals and communities. I felt
exhilarating when I obtained the first PRGS
grant from KPT and it was a really AIMST
experience for me to embark on my project.
In fact, it was such a great opportunity for
me which I will never forget in AIMST. Now
I am looking forward to have my product
patented and hopefully this product will
be able to provide a good alternative for
immobilized patients with elimination

tremendously good dental equipment not

As the saying goes, all work and no play
makes Jack a dull boy. In AIMST campus,
there is a wonderful sports complex where
one can swim in the Olympic-size swimming

physical activities also can be done. As a
hosteller, staying in campus does make me
feel homesick sometimes. However, this has

I was able to do my lab works at any time,

the environment is attractive. Comfortable
hostel, super served cafeteria and market,

Malaysia. Second, I needed to learn English.
In the future, we are going to become more
globalized. So, in my point of view, I think
I should build a unique career to deal with
future challenges. Therefore, I feel my choice is
wonderful to come to AIMST University.
I have experienced many things at AIMST,
especially Malaysian festivals such as Hari Raya,
Mid-Autumn Festival and Deepavali. AIMST has
hosted these celebrations by staff and students

For student willing to study abroad it is
always difficult to choose between foreign
degrees and choose which country to get
your degree from. Like other Bangladeshi
students seeking a foreign degree, I also
fascinated studying in the UK or Australia.
But then again, financing my education in
those countries, especially when you are
willing to study science would have been
a huge burden to my Dad. So after all, I
figured that Malaysia would best fill my
requirements and fit into my dad’s budget
as well.
I went to one local student advisory centre
put forward my requirements. After listening
to me, they suggested that AIMST University
would be perfect choice. Since I did not
complete my A ‘level, AIMST offered me
University Foundation course leading to
Science, passing which I have to choose
among MBBS, BDS, Pharmacy, Engineering,
IT, Materials Technology and Biotechnology
degree programme. My father and I both
decided that AIMST is going to be the
launch-pad for my career.
AIMST University is one of the biggest
private universities in Malaysia. With its
state of the art 210 acre campus, wide

My parents are highly impressed by the
progress made by the AIMST University in
short time. My parents were also impressed
when they saw AIMST’s facilities for the
students. More importantly, the programme
fees are within affordable range; I think,
fees are very minimal in comparison to other
universities in the country.
The first time, when we entered in AIMST
University on the registration day, both my
parents and I were so happy because of
the wonderful landscape. My father was
particularly happy with the tight security,
he feels the university has and until today
I know that he always admires the prompt
responses and professional attention to
his every contact with the university’s
administration. My mother was relieved to
notice that the class rooms and the students’
residences are close.
I am happy, because, I have many
international and national friends at AIMST.
They are all helpful and we share many

I think, the amenities and facilities are

I have experienced many things at AIMST
University since I came here. I think that the
biggest difference between our university
in japan and AIMST University is the class
system. In japan, many universities are
doing passive class. On the other side, at
AIMST University, class are of participatory in
nature. The lecturers and students do have
close association. Therefore, I can participate
in the class aggressively.
Besides, students at AIMST University
are serious in each event such as sports
competition. Therefore, each event is always
a fun. Furthermore, we can unite all the

I am studying at AIMST University since
2011; did my Foundation in Science
and managed to enrol in BDS to achieve
my dream. When I stepped into AIMST
University for the first time, I noticed that
Malays are the minority and I took that
as a challenge. Being half Malay and half
Chinese, it wasn’t that difficult for me to
mix around and communicate. I made really
great friends here who are so dear to me.
After almost 4 years of studying here, I have
learnt a lot about life as well as improving
self-qualities. I learnt how to respect other
people and their beliefs, I’ve expanded my
view of Malaysians’ norms from different
angles and different races and I appreciate
my country a little better. I have also become
more independent, patient, confident, and
comfortable in English communication. In

My experience with AIMST University

I was not really keen to leave hometown
for education purpose. Finally I decided to
study at AIMST University for my ‘Foundation
in Science’. My first few days were tough.
I rarely left my room and preferred to be
alone in my hostel room. I complained about
almost everything - food, internet speed
and other things. May be this was due to
homesickness and lack of friends. During
the second week of the academic session,
I realised that it’s easy to complain about
things and feel depressed. I decided to make
efforts to adapt myself with the campus and
make friends. After completing 6 months,
I noticed that I am really in love with the
AIMST campus and feel proud for my own
transformation. So my fellow friends, I
implore you to change your mind-set, look
at all the beautiful things in life and realise

My first impression about AIMST

Currently, I am in year 2. We started to learn
clinical skills which make me feel like being
a real doctor. I’m so interested in those

I have ever studied in. University campus is
really amazing. I have never seen a beautiful

locals. I am staying in the university hostel,

campus is that university offers food (three
meals a day) and laundry services with very

Frankly speaking, I am truly fascinated by
the conducive learning environment at the
AIMST University, thanks to the picturesque
nature of the university. It is hard to digest
that I am going to leave this alma mater
soon. The best part is my Biotechnology
family led by various wonderful lecturers,
staffs and friends. I found that they are
strong backbone throughout my 3 years
journey.
At AIMST, I really value the cross-cultural
surrounding where I can break the ice
to adapt and mingle with multiracial
communities spiced up with international
populations constituted of people from all
walks of life came from different social strata
but can live harmoniously within a single
ecosystem. It must be pretty amazing if AIMST
can engage in active collaboration with other
higher education institutes for some cutting-
