SYNOPSIS

Early 1980’s, Atty. Cely Martinez joins the Family Court as Hearing Officer. Immediately, a case
for support is given to her for action, followed by a case for dissolution of conjugal partnership.
She quickly disposes of the two cases, resulting in moments of discomfort to other members of
the Court’s staff as erstwhile sources of incomes are jeopardized. On the other hand, Cely looks
forward to settling down in the office.

Cely had worked in other government agencies and has always found reasons for leaving in
each one. Her ways get the ire of her colleagues, particularly when she is perceived to be going
against the “rules of the Court.” Her refusal to work for the annulment of a marriage brought to
her for action and the disappearance of a decision she had drafted puts her opposite Atty. Ric
Ricarte, the Court’s senior attorney. She calls the attention of the judge regarding these, but the
Judge would rather let Ric handle the matter. Cely threatens to resign.
Cely’s problems are aggravated by her mother’s condition which had required medical attention.
She is accused of taking a bribe, which she denies. She is threatened with administrative
charges unless she cooperates with the rest of the group and “plays according to the rules.”

Christmas time still finds Cely in the Family Court. In the midst of the office party, she makes a
decision for herself.
