General
Information
Hello!
Thank
you
for
your
interest
in
taking
private
trumpet
lessons!
In
this
outline,
you
will
find
information
about
me,
my
teaching
experience,
procedures
and
policies,
and
other
related
information.
Please
take
a
few
minutes
to
carefully
review
the
information
below.
About
Me:
I
am
originally
from
Norton,
Virginia,
and
I
graduated
in
2012
from
John
I.
Burton
High
School.
During
my
time
there,
I
held
first
chair
in
All-‐County
Band
for
4
years,
and
All-‐District
Band
for
3
years.
I
was
also
fortunate
to
earn
2nd
chair
in
All-‐State
Band,
and
held
the
principal
trumpet
position
at
the
Virginia
Residential
Governor’s
School
for
the
Visual
and
Performing
Arts.
I
graduated
from
Emory
&
Henry
College
in
2016
with
a
Bachelor
of
Arts
degree
in
Instrumental
Music
Education.
After
graduating
from
E&H,
I
moved
to
Athens,
Ohio,
and
acted
as
the
graduate
teaching
assistant
in
the
trumpet
studio
at
Ohio
University,
where
I
earned
my
Master
of
Music
degree
in
Trumpet
Performance.
Currently,
I
am
a
doctoral
teaching
assistant
in
the
trumpet
studio
at
James
Madison
University,
where
I
am
completing
coursework
for
my
Doctor
of
Musical
Arts
degree
in
Trumpet
Performance,
Pedagogy,
and
Literature.
I
have
received
instruction
from
some
of
the
top
performers
and
teachers
in
the
country,
and
have
been
fortunate
to
play
on
some
of
the
world’s
most
famous
stages,
with
world-‐class
performers.
Although
my
professional
career
is
still
rather
young,
I
have
already
had
success
as
a
teacher
and
performer.
Brass
ensembles
that
I
have
coached
have
received
superior
ratings,
and
students
that
I
have
taught
privately
have
gone
on
to
make
all-‐county
band,
all-‐ district
band,
all-‐state
band,
the
Virginia
Governor’s
School
for
the
Visual
and
Performing
Arts,
and
the
National
Youth
Orchestra
of
the
United
States
of
America.
Lesson
Content
and
Expectations:
Music
is
its
own
language,
and
like
any
language,
there
are
many
basics,
which
must
be
mastered
prior
to
advancing
to
more
complex
things.
During
a
course
of
study,
I
try
to
cover
all
areas
of
musicianship:
theory,
technique,
analysis,
ear
training,
sight-‐ reading,
performance,
and
a
thorough
study
of
music
literature.
I
also
realize
that
no
two
students
are
alike,
and
that
students
learn
in
different
ways
and
at
different
speeds.
Therefore,
I
approach
students
as
unique
individuals,
and
challenge
each
according
to
their
own
unique
potential.
In
addition
to
my
studies
in
trumpet
performance,
I
have
worked
closely
with
Dr.
Todd
Kays,
performance
psychologist
and
founder
of
the
Athletic
Mind
Institute.
Working
with
Dr.
Kays
has
not
only
influenced
my
own
playing,
but
my
teaching
as
well.
I
have
a
very
holistic
approach
to
teaching
and
playing
that
involves
a
great
deal
of
mental
skills
practice.
Because
of
this,
students
will
also
have
the
opportunity
to
work
on
mindfulness,
imagery,
practice
journaling,
and
other
unique
practices
in
my
studio
in
order
to
strengthen
their
mental
skills
when
performing.
This
is
a
very
unique
skill
set
that
many
teachers
do
not
teach.
However,
it
is
my
belief
that
it
is
imperative
for
successful
performances.
Because
I
have
a
very
select
group
of
students
in
my
private
studio,
as
well
as
an
extensive
waiting
list,
it
is
imperative
that
the
students
currently
in
my
studio
come
prepared
to
their
lessons.
I
hold
my
students
very
accountable
and
expect
them
to
practice
on
a
daily
basis,
since
daily
practice
is
absolutely
essential
for
any
progress
to
be
made.
Students
who
continually
come
to
their
lessons
unprepared,
and
show
lack
of
practice
and
motivation
will
lose
their
spot
in
my
studio.
I
reserve
the
right
to
terminate
lessons
if
the
student
misses
6
or
more
lessons
during
the
school
year,
if
the
student
fails
to
practice
on
a
consistent
basis,
or
if
the
student
displays
no
interest
in
taking
private
lessons.
Lesson

a

24
hours

if
at
all
possible.
Feel
free
to
notify
me
by
phone
call,
text,
or

Students
who
miss
a
lesson
and
do
not

me
are
still
responsible
for
paying
the
full
lesson
fee,
unless
the
lesson
was
missed
due
to
emergency
circumstances.
If
you
are
running
late
for
any
reason,
please
contact
me
as
soon
as
possible.
The
lesson

will
not
be
extended
because
you
are
late,
and
you
will
still
be
charged
the
full
amount
for
the
lesson.
If
I
am
running
late
for
any
reason,
I
will
notify
you
as
soon
as
I
can,
and
will
make
up
the
full
lesson
time
to
you.
Unexcused
lessons
will
not
be
tolerated.
Students
who
miss
a
lesson
and
do
not
notify
me
with
at
least
24
hours
notice
are
still
responsible
for
paying
the
full
lesson
fee.
Consecutive
unexcused
lesson
absences
are
grounds
for
termination
of
lessons.
If
you
have
to
miss
a
lesson,
you
must
notify
me
with
at
least
24
hours
advance
notice.
If
I
have
to
miss
a
lesson
for
any
reason,
I
will
notify
you
as
soon
as
possible.
I
will
do
my
best
to
schedule
a
make
up
lesson
if
this
occurs.
If
you
are
ill
or
recovering
from
an
illness,
please
let
me
know
as
soon
as
possible,
and
we
will
cancel
the
lesson.
Also,
if
significant
practice
time
has
been
missed
during
the
week
due
to
illness,
please
notify
me
and
we
will
postpone
that
lesson.
In
the
case
of
school
cancellations
for
weather,
all
lessons
will
also
be
cancelled
or
moved
to
Skype
lessons
if
at
all
possible.
Music
and
Miscellaneous
Purchases:
During
the
student’s
time
in
private
lessons,
there
will,
on
occasion,
be
pieces
of
music,
method
books,
and
miscellaneous
accessories
that
need
to
be
purchased.
I
have
a
working
partnership
with
several
music
and
accessory
retailers,
and
will
work
with
all
of
them
to
find
the
best
price,
in
order
to
keep
extra
expenses
at
a
minimum
for
the
students
and
their
families.
It
is
also
recommended
that
the
student
bring
a
small,
one
subject
notebook
to
write
down
assignments,
and
a
folder
to
keep
track
of
any
handouts
or
copies
to
each
lesson.
