Economics on Greenhouse production of Capsicum

Colour Capsicum ( Capsicum annuum)

The genus Capsicum belongs to the family Solanaceae.

Bell pepper has attained a status of high value crop in India in
recent years and occupies a pride of place among vegetables in
Indian cuisine because of its delicacy and pleasant flavour
coupled with rich content of ascorbic acid and other vitamins
and minerals.

Soil and climate

- It can be grown in many types of soils but well drained loamy
soils rich in lime yields more.
- Crop is very sensitive to cold. 15 to 35 C is suitable

2
Crop cycle

Stage Duration

Nursery 30 Days

Planting to First flower 25 days after Trans planting.

First flower to first picking 60 to 70 days after the flowering.

Harvesting period 5 to 6 months

3
Nursery and Selection of Verities

- Unless you are experienced in growing seedlings, it is better to

purchase the seedling from the reputed nursery.

- Around 12000 seedlings/Acr.

- Select the variety suitable to the season, good yielding and better shape,
suitable to the Green house production.

4
Land preparation and Planting
- MB ploughing fallowed by cultivation.

- Application of compost, Neemcake, basal

dose of fertilizer and biological.

- Rotavation , bed making, mulching,

marking and trans planting.

- Spacing 1.5m Furrow to furrow, row to row

is 50cm and plant to plant 40 to 45cm.

5
Pinching and Pruning
- Pinching operation was carried out at one month after transplanting
according to different methods like two shoot or three shoot system.

Irrigation

- Approximately 80 per cent of water used by capsicums is extracted from

the upper 30 cm of soil. Dry down of the 30-60 cm zone is an indicator
of stress in capsicums and leads to small fruit, poor fruit set and
blossom end rot.
