“DUQUE DE RIVAS”  

• Conditional  Sentences  are  used  to  express  that  the  action  in  the  main  clause  can  only  take  
place  if  a  certain  condition  is  fulfilled.    
‘I  will  help  you  with  your  homework  IF  you  help  me  with  mine.’  
• The  conditional  clause  is  usually  introduced  by  IF  (‘si’)  or  UNLESS  (‘a  menos  que’).  
• There  are  three  types  of  Conditional  Sentences:    type  1,  2  and  3.  
 
CONDITIONAL  SENTENCE  TYPE    1→        if  +  Simple  Present  /  will-­‐Future  
 
It  is  possible  and  also  very  likely  that  the  condition  will  be  fulfilled.  
 
‘If  I  find  her  address,  I’ll  send  her  an  invitation’.  
OR  
‘I  ‘ll  send  her  an  invitation  if  I  find  her  address.’  
 
Si  encuentro  su    dirección,  le  enviaré  la  invitación  (y  seguro  que  la  voy  a  encontrar)  
 
 
CONDITIONAL  SENTENCE  TYPE  2→       if  +  Simple  Past  /  would  +  Infinitive    
 
It  is  very  unlikely  or  impossible,  that  the  condition  will  be  fulfilled.  
         
‘If  I  found  her  address,  I  would  send  her  an  invitation.’  
OR  
‘I  would  send  her  an  invitation  If  I  found  her  address’.  
 
Si  encontrara  su  dirección,  le  enviaría  una  invitación  (pero  no  lo  creo).  
 
 
• We  usually  use  ‘were’  instead  of  ‘was’  in  the  conditional  clause.  
‘If  I  were  the  president  of  the  government,  I  would  build  better  schools.’  
• We  often  use  IF  I  WERE  YOU...  to  give  advice  (‘yo  de  ti’.    
‘If  I  were  you,  I  would  call    a  doctor’  
 
 
CONDITIONAL  SENTENCE  TYPE  3  →       if  +  Past  Perfect  /  would  have  +  Past  Participle    
 
They  refer  to  the  past,  so  it  is  impossible  that  the  condition  will  be  fulfilled.  
         
‘If  I  had  found  her  address,  I  would  have  sent  her  an  invitation.’  
OR  
‘I  would  have  sent  her  an  invitation  if  I  had  found  her  address.’  
 
Si  hubiera  encontrado  su  dirección,  le  hubiera  enviado  la  invitación    
(pero  no  la  encontré  y  por  lo  tanto  no  le  envié  la  invitación)  
 
Exceptions:    sometimes  Conditional  Sentences  Type  I,  II  and  III  can  also  be  used  with  other  
tenses  (2ºBach).
