A Proof of Concept (POC) is designed to demonstrate the value of WLE in the context of your
business. POCs have been used by many of our clientssdfskdfslfklsdkjlfskjldfskjl as an important
and necessary step in the evaluation of the WLE Business
Prsdfklsfklsfklsdfkjlsdfklsfklsfsklfklsfklsflsfkljsocess Managemejkkjkjjkkjnt System
(BPMSsdfsfsjkfskjfsjkfsdfjsfkjskjsfxdvsdfsdf). The POC provides a detailed understanding of our
product as well as the skills required to use it.

At IBM, we feel it is critical for every POC to focus on experiencing the capabilities and
differentiation of WLE in all phases of a process life-cycle, including:
 process modeling and impxfbxbsdgsgdfgdrhhhhdhdgdgdgdgdfggdgdgdgdflementation
 process executionvsdsd
 process monitoring and visibility
 process analysis and optimizationskcsdkskskdskdks

Integral to all of these capabilities is the collaboration between business and IT fostered by
WLE. In addition to highlighting collaboration during modeling and implementation, we also use
“playbacks” to demonstrate the collaboration with end-users in the
iteradfhdgdgdgdgdfggdgdgdfgdgdgfdgdgdgdggdgdgdgtive development and deployment of your
process. fbjdfgdkjgfjdkgkjdgjk

We also believe that the hands-on experience and education in a POC offers the best way to
understand key capabilities and differences between BPMS products – it is not just a question of
“if the product does it”, but also “how the product does it.” Our POC agenda dedicates most of
the time to educating your team, and we strongly encourage hands-on participation. Additionally,
our agenda typically includes time for discussions on topics such as security, scalability and
reliability, integration, configuration management, and supported platforms.

What Makes a Good Process Example in a POC?

The POC focuses on a process example from your business. The best process examples are
ones that are familiar to you and your team. It is very helpful for you to understand how the
process works today, who performs the process steps, which systems are involved, and where
there are areas for improvement!

It is also important that the process example can be used to demonstrate the various capabilities
of WLE, and help you understand the skills required to use them. Good candidate processes
include (at least one instance of):
 Human activities, especially where “process coaching” can occur for end users.
 Workflow between human users.
 System activities that can be automated.
 Access to external data.
 Process rules, used to determine dynamic routing based on process data.
 Managing process events.
 Managing multiple complex process application projects
 Re-use of common components across projects

 Deployment of process applications to production

The process example does not have to be too complex – it only takes a couple of user interface
flows, database calls, events, and so on, to demonstrate how to model and implement processes
in WLE. And the process example should not be so simple that it is missing important process
constructs that you will want to see and understand during your evaluation.

How Difficult is it to Change a Process?

Real business processes change all the time. And the changes can be required at any time –
driven by external business requirements, changes in regulations, or significant opportunities for
process improvement. A major consideration of ongoing process improvement and maintenance
is how easy (or difficult) it is to make changes to a process over time.

In WLE POCs, we intentionally focus on how easy it is to determine what to change in a process,
assess the impact of changes, implement those changes, and roll those changes into production,
using our “playback” approach.

What Else Should We Focus On in the POC?

Real-time process visibility, process performance tracking, and process analysis and optimization
are key capabilities that truly enable management of your business processes. IBM POCs will
show you how to enable and define process tracking and reporting for both real-time monitoring,
and analysis / optimization using historical and in-flight process performance data.

How will we manage a complex BPM program with multiple process

projects?

The ability to manage multiple process development projects and manage all the assets across
these projects while maximizing re-use is a key component to BPM program success. IBM will
demonstrate advance versioning and process application deployment capabilities. IBM has
helped many enterprise customers move from single BPM projects to effective BPM programs
and BPM centers of excellence that deploy multiple BPM projects in a repeatable manner. IBM
will discuss specific customer use cases and how the product capabilities support these best
practices.

What About Integrating to our In-house Systems?

Every real-world process interacts with existing systems. Our customers can testify that they have
numerous systems that are integrated to their WLE processes – ranging from in-house
homegrown applications, to 3rd-party enterprise applications. Time constraints in a typical POC
will not allow us to exhaustively prove all possible technical integrations … but we do want to
demonstrate our WLE integration framework, which is based on standard technologies and is
extremely “open”. We will work with you to determine a few examples that show how connectors
to your key systems can be quickly defined and configured in WLE.

And we will also be prepared to discuss the broader topics of enterprise integration and “fit”,
including leveraging your messaging infrastructure, security systems, and preferred execution
platforms in WLE deployments.

What If We Have Additional Technical Proof Points?

There may be a number of technical proof points that you feel strongly about including in your
evaluation, but may not easily fit in the mainstream POC agenda, or may require the participation
of some specialized IBM resources. For example, you may want to prove more time-consuming
integrations, or installation and configuration on your preferred app server and OS.

In these cases, we will be happy to discuss how we can make arrangements to address the
additional technical proof points. This often occurs following the POC experience, after having
determined that WLE and IBM are indeed your preferred platform and vendor, and that you would
like to make the continued investment in evaluating the technical feasibility of WLE.

What Facilities Will We Need to Host the POC?

We are equipped to bring WLE pre-installed on portable IBM POC servers, if desired. Or we can
install WLE on your hardware and databases. We typically use our “Express” installer for POC
purposes. The Express installer is designed for quick installation of WLE Enterprise Edition on an
embedded application server running on Windows, accessing your choice of SQL Server, Oracle,
or IBM DB2 UDB databases.

The hardware and software requirements for WLE clients and servers on Windows are found in
the appendix.

A conference room with projector, etc. is also strongly recommended for a productive experience.

What People Will We Need to Host the POC?

A productive and successful POC can only be achieved with your active involvement. We
recommend that you have at least 2 people dedicated full-time to working with our team side-by-
side during a POC. Usually, one of these people is more technical, and one of them is more
business focused. In addition, during the daily “playbacks”, we recommend participation by
additional business users and managers to see the process development and provide feedback.
For the focused discussion topics during the POC, we invite your network security, infrastructure,
and DBA staff to attend.

What Is a Typical Agenda for a POC?

A standard WLE POC consists of the following 4 parts:

1. Start from scratch, build and execute the example process

Playback #1
2. Iterate on the process and make changes
Address discussion Topics
Playback #2
3. Visibility, Reporting, Optimization
Playback #3
4. Executive presentation

Depending on your availability, the number of topics to be addressed, the complexity of the
process, and the number of key participants, these “core” parts of the POC agenda will span 1 to
3 days.

The POC activities are typically closed with an Executive Presentation. This provides a means
for a broader audience to review the key learnings and results of the POC, including an end-to-

end demonstration of the “final playback.” This is a business focused presentation lasting 60-120
minutes. Depending on the audience, this may include a detailed technical discussion.

A few days after the POC, we will produce a “Post-POC Package” that includes a presentation
and screenshots of the POC highlights that can be shared with those that were not able to
participate.

An example POC agenda is found in the attached appendix.
