Example 1:

A passenger bus travels at 30 mph. A passenger car (Hyundai-Elantra)

travels at 80 mph. If they travel in opposite directions, how long will it take before
they are 275 miles apart?

Distance= Rate * Time

Type Rate Time Distance f(x)

Car 80 x F(x)=80x

Bus 30 x F(x)=30x

Solution:

80x + 30x =275

110x =275

110 110X= 2.5

In 2 hours and a half hour hours, they will be 275 miles apart.

Conclusion:

Based on the table above, the passenger bus travels at 30 mph while the
passenger car travels 80 mph. In 2 hours and a half hours, they will be 275 miles
apart.
Example 2:

Abdul is a entrepreneur and a father of two boys, his eldest son is a

basketball varsity player and they live in Butuan but he is currently working in
Cagayan de Oro City. His eldest son has a basketball game that he has to catch
up at 3 pm. Abdul made use of his Toyota-Altis (having an average speed of
200mph) and left his work at 12:00 noon. If the distance between Butuan City to
Cagayan de Oro is 110 miles and Abdul is driving with 2 constant speed of 50
mph, has long will it take him to arrive his destination? Will he able to watch his
son play the game?

Time= Distance/ Speed

Let y be the function that describes the time consumed for x miles travelled. F(x)=x/50

Distance(x) Speed Time=f(x)=x/50

1 Mile 50 mph f(1)=1/50=0.02

2 Miles 50 mph f(2)=2/50=0.04

. . .

. . .

. . .

110 Miles 50 mph f(110)=110/50=2.2hrs

Conclusion: :. Abdul will take 2 hours and 12 minutes to arrive in Butuan City and will
surely be able to watch his son’s game.
Example 3:

A honda civic car travels at average speed of 45 kph going to Bukidnon in

2 hours travel time. If it had traveled 30 kph, how many more minutes will it take
for the car to reach destination?

Distance= Rate* Time

Rate Time Distance f(x)

Case 1 45 kph 2 hours F(x)= 45(2)=90

Case 2 30 kph t F(x)=30(t)=30t

Solution:

30 t = 90

T=90/30

T=3

Conclusion:

It would take 3 Hours for the car to reach the destination if he had traveled
30 kph.
Example 4:

Two groups of friends are going on a vacation. The first group of

friends used their Subaru Forester and the second group of friends used
their Toyota Altis. They will both leave at 8:00 am at an opposite direction.
The first car heads to the west at a constant rate of 60 kph while the other
heads to east at a constant rate of 40 kph. How long will it take for them to
be 200 mile apart?

Rate Time Distance f(x)

Car 1 60 kph t F(x)= 60t

Car 2 40 kph t F(x)=40t

Solution:

60t + 40 t =200

100t =200

100 100

T=2

Conclusion:

It would take them 2 hours for them to be 200 miles apart.

Example 5:

Magallon’s family is going to a place 120 km away from Cagayan de Oro

using their new, Suzuki Jimny. How long will the trip take if they will travel at 2
rate of 60 kph?

Time= Distance/ Speed

Let t be the function that describes the consumed x miles travelled. T (x) = x/60

Speed (x) Travel time t(x)

10 kph T(x)=120/10=12 Hours

30 kph T(x)=120/30+4 Hours

. .

. .

. .

. .

60 kph T(x)=120/60=2 Hours

Conclusion:

Based on the table above, the car is travelling at 2 constant speed of 60

kph. They will arrive at their destination in 2 hours.
