Use each fragment in a sentence.

Activity 17. Correcting Run-ons

Use an end mark, comma, and a coordinating conjunction, or a semi-colon to correct each of the
first five run-ons. Form a simple or complex sentence to correct each of the last five run-ons.

Example: Davy Crockett was a frontiersman, he was also a congressman.

2. Misplaced/Dangling Modifier- the correct placement of phrases and clause modifiers is an


essential ingredient of clear writing.

A modifier should be placed as close as possible to the word it modifies.


A misplaced modifier appears to modify the wrong word in the sentence.

Growing wild in the forest, we picked the tiny blossoms.

The lake attracted many birds with gentle waves.

A dangling modifier appears to modify either the wrong word or no word at all because the word it should
logically modify is missing.

Activity 18. Correcting Misplaced Modifiers

Rewrite each sentence, correcting the misplaced modifier. Then underline the corrected modifier
and draw an arrow from it to the word it modifies.

Activity 19. Correcting Dangling Modifiers

Run-On Sentence Worksheet
Fifteen of the following sentences are run-on sentences. Please correct each one of them on
the lines below. Use all three ways to correct run-on sentences at least three times each
(period, semicolon, comma plus coordinating conjunction).
Five of them are correct. Write a C under each correct sentence.
