INTRODUCTION:-
Check list is basically a method of recording whether a characteristic is present or absent,
whether an action had or had not taken place. It is one of the most commonly used instrument
for performance evaluation. A check list enables the observer to note only whether or not a trait
is present. It consists of a listing of steps, activities and behaviors which the observer records
when an incident occurs. It provides a simple yes or no judgment.

The following steps summarize the development of a check list for evaluating a
procedure consisting of series of sequential steps:-

 Identify each of the specific action desired in the performance.

 Add to the list those actions that represent common errors.
 Arrange the desired actions in the approximate order in which they are expected to occur.
 Provide a simple procedure for checking each action as it occurs.

DEFINITION:-

A check list is a simple instrument consisting prepared list of expected items of

performance or attributes, which are checked by a researcher for their presence or absence.

Check list are constructed by breaking a performance and the quality of a product which
specifies the presence or absence of an attribute or trait which is then “checked” by the
rater/observer.

It is a two dimensional arrangement in which a series of questions is listed along

one dimension and response alternatives are listed along the other, that is why check list are
sometimes called matrix questions.
CHARACTERISTICS OF CHECKLIST:-

 Observe one respondent at one time

 Clearly specify the characteristics of behavior to be observed.
 Use only carefully prepared checklist to avoid more complex traits.
 The observer should be trained how to observe, what to observe, and how to record the
observed behavior.
 Use checklist only when you are interested in calculating, a particular characteristic.

CONSTRUCTION OF CHECKLIST:-
While constructing or preparing a checklist, the following points should be kept in
mind.

 Express each item in clear, simple language.

 An intensive survey of the literature is made to determine the types of checklist to be
used in a particular research.
 The list of the item in the checklist may be continuous or divided into groups of related
items.
 Avoid negative statements whenever possible.
 Ensure that each item has clear responses: yes or no, true or false, and the like.
 Reviews the items independently.
 Checklist must have the quality of completeness and comprehensiveness.

ADVANTAGES OF CHECKLIST:-
 Checklist allows individual comparisons.
 It provides a simple method to record observation.
 Adaptable to subject matter areas.
 It is useful in evaluating learning activities.
 Helpful in evaluating procedural work.
 Properly prepared, it allows the observer to contain the direct attention.
 Checklist have the objectivity to evaluate characteristics.
 Useful for evaluating those processes that can be subdivided into a series of action.
 Decrease the chances of error in observation.
DISADVANTAGES OF CHECKLIST:-
 Does not indicate quality of performance, so usefulness of checklist is limited.
 Only a limited component of overall clinical performance can be evaluated.
 Only the presence or absence of an attribute, behaviour, or performance parameter may
be assessed. However, degree of accuracy of performance cannot be assessed.
 It has a limited use in qualitative research studies.
