Reflection Paper on the course ChE Plant Design (ChE 511)

Considered as the culmination of the Chemical Engineering undergraduate study, the

ChE 511 course lived up to its title. There were so many challenges that we have encountered
throughout the entire semester, but as they say, overcome the hurdle and it will be fulfilling.

Last semester’s ChE 511 class, I would say was the hardest of all Plant Design classes.
The fact that we need to do it perfect because of the looming ABET Re-Accreditation of the
school made it difficult. It pushed us to our limit. It drained us physically, mentally and
emotionally but in spite all of that we have made it through, with lots of patience, persistence
and hard work. Engr. Lina dela Cruz, is a tough one, she made it clear that she wants it perfect,
and we know that all of her comments toward our work is for our own good. She made it hard
for us, but she also made it easy.

We learned how to manage our time efficiently, we learned productivity, we acquired

critical and logical thinking skills, we learned how to communicate well with our groupmates,
we developed problem solving skills, and lastly we learned how to trust others. Our adviser
indeed is a great one, she opened up our eyes that the hurdle that we want to overcome is
not our Plant Design Project, rather it was ourselves.

Plant Design itself an activity, an activity that you want to work on every day, an activity
which you should polish and an activity that you should love. It was difficult, but at the end of
the road you will smile, reminiscing the journey that you have been through. I only wish that
others would feel the same way and do not blame people for their shortcomings, and for them
to continue to develop.

Reflection Paper on the course Separation Processes (ChE 501)

Starting my last school year with one of the hardest subjects in Chemical Engineering
undergraduate study, and with a new professor, how fun it was. Honestly, I do not know what
to expect or what I should do to ace the subject, but thanks to our instructor it was so much
fun.

Engr. Allan Almajose, our instructor in this course, was looking forward to teach us
what he knew about. I and my classmates expected that it would be a difficult one, but we
were wrong. He made it as a course that we can easily manipulate in our hands, he thought
us techniques to solve the problem correctly and efficiently. What I was most hooked up to
was his skills on programming. We were able to learn how to program difficult tasks which we
will be needing on our Plant Design course.

What I acquired in this course were really on how to program different Chemical
Engineering Unit Operations which we can apply on our future works. The whole experience
being thought by someone who is really into programming was a very worthwhile. I really
stayed up until 3:00 in the morning just to finish my own program for Distillation, and he was
amazed on what I did. It is just a testament that I was very interested with the subject.

I just want to commend and thank again Engr. Almajose for the knowledge he
imparted us. I hope that someday he will be able to come back to the school to teach others
of what he is doing, I think we need more of him especially in the Computer Applications in
ChE (ChE 508).

Reflection Paper on the course Introduction to Particle Technology (ChE 509)

We were introduced to processes used in the industry for processing solids and
particles, another Chemical Engineering essential. The experience from the course was a good
one.

The amount of things I have learned in this class is immense and to briefly summarize
what I learned in class, I would have to claim that I learned how to listen and learn. I have a
better understanding on how various ways of taking information can lead to various versions
of understanding. I was able to understand things more effectively, in screening process, size
reduction and sedimentation. I was very moved on how was I able to overcome the subject,
because honestly I cannot get it the first few weeks.

My takeaways for the course is something like more of understanding things

differently, look at it the other sides. When you cannot get a hang of it, talk to someone who
knows it more and it would be helpful. Fortunately for me, I was able to understand it and
when I think of it, I have already loved the subject before I knew it.

Reflection Paper on the course Safety in the Process Industry (ChE 504)

Safety in the Process Industry (S.P.I.) was an informative course. It was more of a
discussion and reporting. What I learned from the course were a lot. Each day the topic was
new. We were treated to a journey on different processes used in the Chemical Engineering
world. The course gave us a look on every industry where we can work in the future.

We were able to have a grasp on every aspect we need to learn in the common
processes needed in the industry. Not only that, but we were also taught on how to work
safely and productively. You only saw how simple things can be on the outside, but in the
inside it is much worse. What I meant was that if you were to establish a business there were
so much requirements that you need before to start one. We had reports on every case that
we will need one. The information was a lot but at least we were able to have an inside look
on how things operate in the industry.

Proper management techniques were also thought to us. And as for me, I was able to
apply these things in my everyday life. There is also analyzing the worst possible scenario that
would happen and what to do when it comes to that. I am very happy that not only that we
were thought with every concept that we need to know as Chemical Engineers but also on
how we will handle things in a real setting, and how should we respond to it.
