2.0 ASET Background & Capabilities
2.1 The company has been delivering competence based training since 1993 and
acquired the Shell Operations training facility in February 2000.
ASET opened its new International Oil & Gas Training Academy in March 2012,
recognised by both the UKCS and International Oil and Gas industries as a “world
class training facility” and arguably the finest of its kind anywhere in the world.
Together with ASET’s original facilities for Marine and Electrical training, we are now
able to call upon an overall investment in resources in excess of £10M. These
facilities have allowed us to achieve an impressive reputation in the delivery of the
following:
3.1 ASET International Oil & Gas Training Academy is a wholly-owned subsidiary
company of Aberdeen College and specialises in the provision of engineering,
electrical, and marine education and training for the oil and gas (and other)
industries. ASET remits all operating surpluses to the college for the good of the
community.
3.2 As a subsidiary company, ASET is provided with the whole hearted support from the
parent body in regard to facilities, resources, staff, teaching materials, staff
development, quality assurance and occupational health.
4.1 Aberdeen College was established in 1991 following the merger of the 3 colleges in
the city. It is one of Scotland’s largest further education colleges, averaging more
than 35,000 enrolments, offering a wide range of general and vocational education,
meeting the needs of clients from basic education, learning opportunities, through

qualifications. The College is organised in four sectors:
5.1 Aberdeen College management was previously accredited to the Scottish Quality
Management System (SQMS) which was a widely recognised management standard
for academic institutions. However, Aberdeen College has continued to develop and
improve and now meets the standards of the EFQM. SQMS incorporated a number
of other quality standards including BS EN ISO 9001, the requirements of the
Scottish Qualifications Authority and Investors in People (Scotland). All oil and gas
related training is carried out to accredited standards including the standards set by
the following bodies:
6.1 ASET & Aberdeen College has been the recipient of many awards over the years
and these include:
Government Charter Mark for Quality (held from 1994 to the present day)
SQMS (Scottish Quality Management System)
Sword of Honour – British Safety Council
Queens Anniversary Prize Higher and Further Education – 1994 and 2009
Investors in People
European Foundation For Quality Management 2002
In 2005 Aberdeen College and ASET received 4 silver awards from the
Scottish Qualifications Authority. With regards to this last item, it should be
recognised that there were only 36 awards in total and that there were
potentially 44 colleges, hundreds of schools and a number of training
organisations all eligible to receive one.

7.0 Training Programme and Equipment Technology Information
ASET are training and assessing production and maintenance trainees and
experienced personnel in a safe environment that presents the reality with
minimal risk in both production and maintenance operations
ASET can train and assess process mechanical instrumentation and
electrical personnel ranging from new entrants to experienced production
and maintenance personnel
ASET’s ABCOL Oil and Gas Production Training Platform is a world class training
facility encompassing a hybrid of some leading and legacy production facilities and
equipment.
The training platform investment exceeded £5 million for this innovative project.
All ASET’s training curriculum is developed to the highest quality and meets both
North Sea and international oil and gas industry standards and requirements.
ASET’s training curriculum ranges from SVQ vocational based production and
maintenance training and assessment programmes to over 100 oil and gas short
technical courses accredited by leading UK based oil and gas industry awarding
bodies. This unique training facility allows ASET to produce some of the finest oil
and gas technicians in the industry and plays a crucial part in preparing the future
lifeblood of the industry.
ASET in conjunction with Aberdeen College was the first CompEx approved
hazardous area training centre of its kind anywhere in the world and opened in 1994.
ASET hold the enviable position of being world market leaders in Ex hazardous area
training to CompEx standards and in conjunction with JTL (CompEx awarding body)
introduced the CompEx online examination to replace written examinations to
enhance the candidate experience with a view to improving service levels for all.

Explosive atmospheres occur in many industries, such as Oil and Gas drilling
production, petrochemical, Pharmaceutical and even waste water treatment.
The CompEx scheme was introduced so that Companies could ensure the personnel
they employ have the necessary skills and competencies to safety select, install,
inspect and maintain equipment in potentially explosive atmospheres.
Electrical Power
Instrumentation
Combustible Dusts
The CompEx Certification lasts 5 Years, after which ASET offer refresher
training to maintain the candidates’ level of competence
This course provides training in the safe operation of high voltage systems and
includes practical exercises to assess the competence of the candidate. On
successful completion of the course the candidate is awarded a city and Guilds 0672
Certificate.
The Marine Department of ASET is situated within the Gallowgate College complex
and provides training to delegates in specialist fields of Offshore Marine.
The courses provided are the internationally approved by the Nautical Institute for
Dynamic Positioning operators. These are delivered in the classroom and utilise 2
full size DP simulators from different manufacturers (Converteam ‘C’ series along
with a Kongsberg SDP 21).
Offshore Stability & Ballast Control for Semi-submersibles courses which comply
with IADC/NI Guidelines and the IMO requirement A.891 (21) for the selection and
training of Ballast Control Operators, along with Marine Operations of Self Elevating
Platforms (Jack up Rigs). For this ASET operates two marine training simulators
utilising the same hydraulically actuated control platform. This control platform
simulates the movement of a mobile drilling unit (MODU) control room as the MODU
moves in a seaway to the effect of both external and internal forces. Alternatively,
the second simulator for Jack-Up operations functions as a jacking control room and
again moves to reflect conditions of loading or weather. Both simulations offer a very
sophisticated range of scenarios giving rise to a high degree of realism for students.
The following courses are offered in conjunction with Intertek as part of our Well and
Drilling Intervention Training portfolio:
