ABSTRACT

This is a simple and useful circuit for controlling the speed of DC motor. This can be
used in different applications like robotics, automobiles etc.

The circuit comprises of 555 Timer IC operated in astable mode. It is called free-running
because it alternates between two different output voltage levels during the time it is on.
The output remains at each voltage level for a definite period of time. The speed of DC
motor can be varied by varying the ON and OFF times of the 555 Timer.

The output of the timer IC is given to the motor driver L293D. Since the digital circuits
cannot drive the heavy loads like motors, this driver circuitry is used. Thus the motor
rotates at a speed depending on the ON and OFF times of the 555 Timer IC.

This circuit uses regulated 5V, 500milli amperes power supply. 7805 three terminal
voltage regulator is used for voltage regulation. Bridge type full wave rectifier is used to
rectify the ac output of secondary of 230/12V step down transformer.
