Chapter 11 The Civil War

The War Begins

The south creates the Confederate States of America

 Create a constitution
 Guarantees the right to own slaves
 Independent states, not a union
 Chose Jefferson Davis as their president

Lincoln becomes president

 Promised not to interfere with slavery where it already existed
 The only solution was to negotiate as friends

Fort Sumter: island in the south that is still held by the union. Commander
of the fort reports to DC to tell Lincoln that they only have a 6 week supply
of food and limited troops.

Lincoln decided to just send food but no troops reinforcement or

ammunition. Confederates don’t like this they saw it as an “invasion” of
territory and began bombarding the fort. Commander Anderson
surrenders.

Upper south Secedes

 After Fort Sumter Lincoln calls for 75k troops
 Lincolns call provoked to upper south to secede
 Virginia was a huge loss for the union
 DC was now right on the boarder of the south
 Virginia was the most industrialized state in the south

Border States: “I hope to have God on my side, but I must have Kentucky.”
– Abe Lincoln. Lincoln didn’t want to lose anymore states from the south.
