Meaning of Invlusion
WAYS THAT WE CAN ALL BE MORE INCLUSIVE IN OUR CLASSROOMS

WHAT IS INCLUSION?

Inclusion is ensuring that “all students should have

equitable access to learning, opportunities for

achievement, and the pursuit of excellence in all

aspects of their educational programs.” (Ministry of

Education, 2016, p. 1).

UNIVERSAL DESIGN FOR

LEARNING

A concept that considers challenges and barriers

while creating lessons to ensure that we are

addressing and overcoming them for all of our

students

BENEFITS OF UDL

When you help support students in the margins first,

you will actually help support all of your students. It

also allows students to have more choice, more

ways of expressing themselves, and a better

understanding of their own learning.

BC CURRICULUM

Focuses on creating inclusion in the classroom by

focusing on "meaningful participation and the

promotion of interaction with others" (Hutchinson,

2017, p. 9). Uses IEPs and other documents to

support students' learning goals and services

needed to be successful in school. New curriculum

allows teachers to focus more on student-centred

learning and individualized inquiry base options for

students to understand their own learning.

APPLICATIONS IN MY
PRACTICE

I can use UDL when planning my lessons to ensure

that I am creating an inclusive lesson for all types

of learners with all types of needs. I can also

ensure that I am teaching my students SEL and

other social inclusion skills to ensure that they are

building a classroom community built on respect,

empathy, and inclusion for all students regardless

of their race, gender, ability, or circumstances.
