1. DESCRIPTIVE TITLE: Principles of Tourism I/Introduction to Tourism

5. COURSE DESCRIPTION The introduction to the study of tourism, where tourism is examined from the perspectives of a phenomenon, an
industry and as a field of study or research. As a phenomenon, the major factors that contribute to its development,
growth and decline both in the world and in the Philippines are analyzed. As an industry, the course looks at the
various sectors that comprise the tourism system and how they interact with each other. As a field of research, major
tourism theories are introduced. Basic definitions and concepts relating to tourism’s political environmental, economic
and cultural impacts are also discussed.

6. AIMS AND OBJECTIVES At the end of this course, the students are expected to:
a. Describe the scope of travel and tourism industry.
b. Trace the historical development of world tourism and discuss how the introduction of railroads, automobiles and air travel affected the hospitality
industry.
c. Explain the importance of understanding travel motivation in determining the nature of travel demand.
d. Identify and distinguish various economic, social cultural and environmental concepts and issues in travel and tourism industry.
e. Instill appreciation on the importance of tourism industry in our country.

9. TEACHING AND LEARNING ACTIVITIES (TLAs)

CILO 1  The instructor will present and discuss concepts, principles, and theories of tourism.
 The students will discuss in class the concepts, principles and theories of tourism as they relate to their own experiences and will play
video/multimedia presentation from internet sources.
CILO 2  The instructor will present the historical development of world tourism.
 The students will illustrate historical development of world tourism through powerpoint presentation. Through oral recitation, the students will
differentiate the eras in historical development of world tourism.
CILO 3  The instructor will present the overview of the importance of understanding travel motivation in determining the nature of travel demand.
 The students will discuss the importance of understanding travel motivation in determining the nature of travel demand by doing their own
research to be presented through powepoint presentation.
CILO 4  The instructor will present and discuss economic, social, cultural and environmental concepts and issues in travel and tourism industry.
 The students will conduct research on economic, social, cultural and environmental impacts of tourism to be discussed by group in class.
CILO 5  The instructor will present and discuss the importance of tourism industry in our country.
 The students will discuss in class the importance of tourism in our country as they relate to their own experiences and will play
video/multimedia presentation from internet sources.

Quizzes and Assignments 20% 1-4  Quizzes will test and reward the students understanding of the concepts,
principles, and theories of tourism; the historical development of world
tourism; understanding travel motivation in determining the nature of travel
demand; economic, social, cultural and environmental concept and issues in
travel and tourism industry from lectures and readings in written form.
 Assignments will tests the students’ ability to apply the appropriate knowledge
in the historical development of world tourism; tourism resources of different
countries in the world for the benefit of mankind; continents and countries in
the map; the tourist attractions, capital, currency, flag, culture of different
countries in the world; the use of travel information manual.
 The students’ will also be assessed on their ability to search and evaluate
information from library materials and the sources.
Attendance 10% 1-5  Class attendance will assess and reward students presence inside the class
from them to be motivated to attend their classes regularly. Furthermore,
students’ presence contributes to their active engagement with other students
in the class.
Class Participation/Recitation 10% 1-5  Class Participation will test the students’ understanding of the relation of their
knowledge to actual experiences in oral form.
 In reporting, the students’ presentation skills on the topic assigned will also be
assessed.
Projects 10% 1-5  Projects will enable the students to apply what they learned in the subject.
Major Examinations 50% 1-5  The examinations will test the students’ ability to:
