EVOLUTION OF STOVE

INTRODUCTION

A stove is an enclosed space in which fuel is burned to provide heating either to heat the space
in which the stove is situated or to heat the stove itself and items placed on it. Cook stoves are
commonly used for cooking and heating food in developing countries. World’s first stove is
called open fire stove. Then, hearth was introduced which a steep up from the open fire stove
because it was covered on the top, bottom and three sides. Wood burning stove or a coal stove
is typically used for heating a dwelling. A wood burning stove is any stove that burns wood,
word pellets and any other based products and biomass exclusively. The first stove where the
fire was completely enclosed called the Castrol Stove. It is known as stew stove, was masonary
construction in which fire was closed in all sides. Next evolution is iron stove continued with gas
stove. The gas stove used propane or natural gas instead of wood making the stove even more
environment-friendly and safer. Gas stove became popular due to its efficiency. Apparently,
comes new invention of electric stove. Electric stove improved through three generations. The
first electronic stove used heating coils which heated iron hotplates which the pots were placed
on. Though the technology is slowly fading into absolescence, coil still provide the best
durability out of all electric cook-top appliances. Secondly, glass ceramic cooking tops appeared
in the 1970s. It has very low heat conduction but, lets infrared radiation pass very well. Electrical
heating coils or infrared halogen lamps are used as heating components. And, induction stoves
have developed first for professional kitchens, but today also entering the domestic market. It
heats the cookware directly through electromagnetic induction and it requires pots and pans
with ferromagnetic bottoms. Sometimes, induction stoves also have glass-ceramic cooking tops.

THE EVOLUTION OF KITCHEN STOVE

Wooden Burning Stove

A wood burning stove is a heating appliance capable of burning wood fuel and wood
derived biomass fuel such as wood pellets. The stove is connected by ventilation stove pipes to
a suitable chimney or flue, which will fill with hot combustion gases once the fuel is ignited. The
chimney or flue gases must be hotter than the outside temperature to ensure the combustion
gases are drawn out of the fire chamber (Wikipedia, 2017). It is often less efficient when it
comes to an equal balance of fuel to heat because it does not have typical heat exchanger.
Wood burning stoves have more combustion efficient than the heat transfer efficient (High’s
Chimney Service Inc., 2011).

Electric Stove

An electric stove is a stove with an integrated electrical heating device to cook and bake.
It became popular as a replacement for solid fuel (wood or coal) stoves which required more
labour to operate and maintain (Wikipedia, 2017). An electric ovens were available as early
1890s but, at that time, the technology and distribution of the electricity needed to power these
early appliances still needed the improvements (Bellis, 2017). The electric stove is easy to use.
These were introduced right after the time that United States was in frenzy to create and
innovate the larger electrical grids and fin a good reason to use them (Lee, (n.d)) Today, it can
be found by variations of colour and trends. The first electric stove ran a current through the
large iron plates. Decades later, coils replaced the iron hot plates and cookware was heated
directly on top. Then, in 1970s, they redesigned the electric stove top by placing glass ceramic,
to create a flat cooking surface and took over as the ideal surface. There are four tips to
maximize the energy efficiency when using the electric stove which are consider the cookware
size, the material of the cookware, the shape of cookware and always keep the stove clean
(Wegert, 2015).

CONCLUSION

With the increasing technology, the stove has been progressing and innovating until today. The
stove also gave a better platform for professional cooking and homes as it offer the efficiency
and safer towards the using. Also, it had improved cooking techniques throughout the centuries.
