The shape or model of the subsurface hydrocarbon

prospect is determined using seismics, its quantity,
volume and value can be estimated.

More hard data is gathered when an actual well is

drilled successfully to test the prospect.

• Calculation of STOIIP or GIIP

Accurate calculation of the value of STOIIP requires knowledge of :

o Volume of reservoir rock containing the oil or gas, expressed as either:

 (a) Gross Rock Volume (GRV) multiplied by the net-to-gross ratio of the
reservoir, or
 (b) Net Rock Volume (NRV) expressing the volume of reservoir rock
only (non-reservoir facies taken out), or
 (c) Area of the reservoir multiplied by net pay thickness. In the USA
this is usually in given in acre-feet, elsewhere in the world in cubic
meters.

o Percentage porosity of the reservoir rock

o Percentage water content of that porosity, to derive Saturation of oil or gas

o Amount of shrinkage that the oil , or expansion for gas which it undergoes
when brought to the Earth's surface

• Since, in the subsurface, hydrocarbon traps are odd shapes.

• So, the calculation of STOIIP or GIIP basic formula is modified the :

o STOIIP (stb) = 7758 x A x h x G C x N/G x phi x So x 1/Boi

o GIIP (scf) = 43560 x A x h x GC x N/G x phi x Sg x Bgi

Where,
o STOIIP [stock tank barrels]
o GIIP [standard cubic feet]
o 7758 = Conversion factor (acre-ft * 7758 = barrels)
o 43560 = Conversion factor (acre-ft * 43560 = scf)
o A = Area [acres]
o h = Gross pay thickness (feet)
o GC = Geometric Correction Factor (decimal)
o N/G = Net Reservoir Pay to Gross Reservoir Pay thickness proportion (decimal)
o phi = Porosity of net reservoir rock (decimal)
o So = Oil saturation , oil-filled portion of this porosity (decimal)
o Sg = Gas saturation , gas-filled portion of this porosity (decimal)
o 1/Boi = Oil Formation Volume Factor (decimal). Expresses the change in oil volume between reservoir and
standard conditions at surface (unit in reservoir barrels / stock tank barrels)
o Bgi = Gas Formation Volume Factor (decimal). Expresses the change in gas volume between reservoir and standard
conditions at surface (unit in standard cubic feet / reservoir cubic feet)

• If the metric system is being used, a conversion factor of 6.289808 can be used to convert cubic metres to
stock tank barrels.
• 1 cubic metre container would hold 6.289808 barrels of oil.
• For gas, 1 cubic metre container would hold 35.315 cubic feet of gas.

• Class Exercise #1 (you will need a calculator):

A) What is the STOIIP in this trap?

o A very flat fault-bounded trap with low relief, about 100 ft high
o Area = 25,000 acres
o Gross pay thickness = 70 ft
o Net Reservoir to Gross Reservoir proportion = 75%
o Porosity of net reservoir rock = 22%
o Water Saturation = 25%
o Oil Formation Volume Factor , 1/Boi = 0.85 stb/rb

given STOIIP (stb) = 7758 x A x h x G C x N/G x phi x So x 1/Boi

B) What is the GIIP in a similar trap?

o All the above remains, and

o Gas Formation Volume Factor, Bgi = 78 scf/rcf.

given GIIP (scf) = 43560 x A x h x GC x N/G x phi x Sg x Bgi
