Skill: Normal Vaginal Delivery

Objectives:
1. Mechanism of normal labour.
2. Assessment of labour progress.
3. Steps involved in the management of second and third stage of labour.

Perform initial hand washing.
Open first layer of the set.

to the mother.
Wait for signs of placental separation.
Hold the umbilical cord taut while placing the
other hand on the abdomen and pushing upward
on the firm uterus away from the placenta,
delivering the placenta by cord control traction
(CCT).
Examine uterine size for contractility.
Assess amount of blood loss.
Inspect the cervix, vagina, labia and perineum
for lacerations.
Examine placenta for completeness

3. Post delivery Recount the instruments and pad/tampon used.
Clean up the mother, keep her dry and
comfortable.
Documentation.
Observe mother closely for 1 hour for
complications.
Prepare mother for suturing if episiotomy was
performed earlier.
