Female
leader The CFA announced last week that local resident Diane
Lawson has been named the new Captain of the Gordon Fire
Brigade.
Lawson, who is the first woman to hold the position, began
volunteering with the CFA over 15 years ago.
Previously serving as Brigade Secretary/Treasurer for over ten
years, Lawson has assisted as a fire-fighter at various incidences,
including the Black Saturday bushfires in 2009.
She has also held the positions of Brigade Community Safety
Coordinator, and was member of the Volunteer Reference
Group, which operated out of CFA’s Headquarters in Melbourne.
“Being chosen for this role to lead by my peers is an honour”,
she said.
“Relationships with different members of the community who
join the brigade, working as a team with the same common
goals and being part of a larger organisation have been very
rewarding”.
“I know that firefighting isn’t for everyone but if anyone
is thinking of joining the CFA, my advice is, Have a go...you
might be surprised!” she said.
Volunteering in the community runs in the Lawson family
with mother Lin, a member for over 25-years of the Gordon
Fire Brigade, and has held positions including 1st, 2nd and 3rd
Lieutenant; currently, Lin is the Comms Officer.
“I used to call Diane cranky pants but now I call her Captain
CHAOS – Captain Has Arrived On Scene.
“This is very pleasing news and I am pleased. We are in the age
of women leaders and is a great step forward not only for the
CFA but for Gordon Fire Brigade,” she said.
