ACADEMIC INTEGRITY
Lincoln High students are expected to be honest and truthful in presenting their work.
Cheating on assignments/tests or allowing others to copy work is not acceptable. It is
considered dishonest to present material on an assignment/test as the product of the student’s
own work when it is the work of another person or source. It is not acceptable to use material
from a web site, book, periodical or other resource without properly giving credit to the
source. Cheating and plagiarism will result in disciplinary action and/or loss of credit for the
project. Turnitin.com is an online service available for use by staff and students to avoid
academic malpractice.

ATHLETIC ATTENDANCE
A student must be in attendance for all class periods in order to participate in contests or
practice on event day. (Exceptions are medical appointments, school business/activities, or
prearranged absences, as approved by Lincoln High School.) Consequences for truancies are:
Truancies – 1 Truancy = Intervention–coach; 2 Truancies = 1 contest suspension; 3
Truancies = 2 additional contest suspensions; 4 Truancies = Suspension for remainder of
season.

ATHLETICS (INTRAMURAL)
The intramural program when available is open to all students. Necessary facilities are made
available for the first hour immediately after school. A variety of physical activities are
available during the three seasons of the school year. Student interest determines what
activities are conducted.

1
ATTENDANCE EXPECTATIONS
Lincoln High School students are expected to attend classes every day and to be in class on
time. Success at Lincoln High requires a combined effort on the part of faculty, parents, and
students. Students at Lincoln High School who accumulate a limited number of excused or
unexcused absences in a class will receive a grade of “F” for the class/no credit.
Parents should call the attendance office (436-1531) as soon as it is apparent a student will be
absent. If a call is not made within the 24 hour limit, the student will be considered truant. If
an absence continues from one day to the next, the parent should call each day. Parents may
also excuse their student in writing. The note should contain the student’s name, parent’s
name and a phone number where the parent can be reached to verify the note. A doctor or
dental appointment scheduled during the school day must be excused through the attendance
office. Students must check out at the attendance office and must check in again when they
return. If a student becomes ill or is injured during the school day, he or she must report to
the school nurse.
All Lincoln Public School campuses are closed during the school day except for juniors or
seniors who may leave campus for lunch with parent permission. Any student needing to
leave campus during the school day must notify the attendance office to receive permission.
School related absences (SA and AD) are not considered in the absence limit. 9th and 10th
grade students are required to stay in the building.
A truancy is an unexcused absence and students might not receive full credit for make-up
work. Unexcused absences also have a negative impact if a student chooses to appeal for the
opportunity to remain eligible to earn credit in a class or classes. Attendance issues are
detailed in the Attendance Information booklet.
The Lincoln Public Schools AND Lincoln High School do not have sanctioned SKIP
DAYS.

CELLULAR PHONES/PAGERS (Electronic Devices)

Students may use their cellular phones, pagers, and electronic devices during passing times
and lunch period in the designated lunch area. Any use of cellular phones or other electronic
devices during class periods (bell to bell) is a violation of school policy and will result in
disciplinary action.

COUNSELING CENTER
Lincoln High counselors offer a wide range of assistance to students. Lincoln High operates a
differentiated program with counselors working in areas of specialization. Counselors work
in grade-level teams to provide systematic guidance and counseling activities to all students
in a timely manner. A grade-level counselor is a good starting point in dealing with any
guidance or counseling issue.
Each year Lincoln High School seniors qualify for numerous types of financial aid which
may be utilized in defraying higher education costs. Current guidance and counseling
information of interest to LHS students is on the Guidance and Counseling Web Site.

2
GRADES REPORTING
The marks used for reporting student progress and points for each in high school are as
follows:
A = 4 (Superior) Weighted Grades
B+ = 3.5 A = 5.0
B=3 B+ = 4.5
C+ = 2.5 C = 4.0
C=2 C+ = 3.5
D+ = 1.5 C = 3.0
D = 1 (Passing) D = no weighting
F = 0 (Failing) F = no weighting
Each individual shall be limited to elect an S/U mark for ten credit points of course work in
any one semester and a maximum of thirty credit points of course work in grades nine
through twelve. S/U grades are not computed in honor roll or class rank.

GRADES WITHDRAWING
The District policy regarding grading options for students who drop a class is as follows: If a
student withdraws from a semester or quarter class during weeks one through three of the
class, no notation goes on their cumulative record. If a student withdraws during weeks four
through eleven of a semester class (week four through five in a quarter class), a “W” will be
placed on the student’s record. If a student withdraws during weeks twelve through eighteen
of a semester class (weeks six through nine in a quarter class), an “F” will be placed in the
student record unless approval is granted for either a “W” or an “INC” to be placed on the
student record. Approval is granted by the principal or designee.

GRADUATION DEMONSTRATION REQUIREMENTS

The Lincoln Board of Education adopted graduation demonstration requirements to ensure
that all students who graduate from high school are skilled in reading, writing, and math. A
graduation demonstration is evidence that a student has reached an expected level of
achievement; the evidence of reaching that expected level may be test scores and/or
coursework. The counseling center has more information about graduation requirements.

3
HEALTH SERVICES
The school nurse provides health counseling, administers first aid procedures in injury or
emergency situations and assists students requiring medication/treatment. ALL students are
required to check in upon entering the health office and to check out when leaving. A medical
release is required to excuse absences longer than 10 school days. The health office is open
from 7:45 a.m. until 3:15 p.m. school days.
Any student injured on the way to school or while at school, must report to the health office
so proper first aid can be given. If the injury is severe, the nurse should be notified and will
come and make an assessment of the problem before the student is moved. The parents will
be notified.
Medication, including over-the-counter, can be given at school if it is in the original container
labeled with the student’s name and the prescription from the doctor (pharmacy label).
Ibuprofen and Tylenol are available with signed parent consent.

HONORS
CLASS RANK: Class rank points will be used to determine class rank. Students will receive
class rank points for each course that they are enrolled in based on the grade that was
received in the course. Weighted courses will receive additional class rank points. Class rank
points will be calculated for all students. The class rank points will be listed from highest to
lowest and a rank will be assigned to each student. (Regulation 6570.2)
NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY: This national organization honors outstanding senior
students who excel in scholarship, leadership, citizenship and service to the school. To be
considered for election, a student must have completed 150 credit hours in grades 9-11 (75 in
NCAA Core Curriculum) and have a GPA of 3.5 or higher at the end of the junior year.
Selection is made by a committee of faculty members on the basis of the student’s overall
record.
HONOR ROLL: In order to qualify for the Honor Roll, a student must have earned 25 hours
with a GPA of 3.50 or higher. Courses taken for marks of S and U shall not be included when
computing honor roll. Students meeting the requirements for Honor Roll are recognized at an
Honors Convocation and a certificate is awarded each honoree.
ACADEMIC LETTER: To earn an academic letter, a student must have earned 25 hours
credit in both semesters of the previous year with a GPA of 4.0 (weighted) or higher.

LOCKERS AND LOCKS

School regulations for the rental of lockers and locks for the school year include: 1) Each
locker in the building is equipped with a school owned padlock; no student owned locks may
be used. 2) Students may select a locker and pay a rental fee. 3) A student may select a locker
mate or may locker alone. 4) All locker rentals must be paid for at the time of rental. 5) The
person(s) who has signed the check-out card will be given the combination and will be
responsible for any vandalism or damage to that locker unless proof is provided that

4
others were responsible. Writing on lockers is prohibited. Lockers are the property of
LHS/LPS.
STUDENTS ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR THE SECURITY OF THEIR LOCKERS
AND FOR ALL ITEMS STORED IN THE LOCKER. Lincoln Public Schools does not
provide insurance for personal items.

LOST AND FOUND

A lost and found department is maintained in the campus security office. Students finding
items should take them to campus security. Lost items are tagged and kept for 30 days and
then given to local agencies.

LUNCH PERIOD
All students have one assigned lunch period. Lincoln School Board Policy allows juniors and
seniors to leave the building during lunch with written parent permission. Freshmen and
sophomores and all other students who eat at school must remain in the building in
designated areas. All food items must be consumed in those areas. Juniors and seniors leaving
campus should not enter the building until eight minutes prior to class beginning. Juniors and
seniors returning early from lunch should go to the west gym entrance. Only plastic drink
bottles are allowed in the building, paper drink cups are not allowed to be brought into the
building at lunch. Students are not to eat lunch in the halls or at their lockers.

MAKE-UP WORK
For all absences students must take the initiative to make up school work missed. Teachers
will allow adequate time to make up work. The school staff accepts the responsibility to help
students make up work in connection with absences. Make-up work may be requested
through the counseling center for extended absences.
MAXIMUM CREDIT EARNED FOR ANY TESTS, ASSIGNMENTS, OR OTHER WORK
MISSED DUE TO TRUANCY OR SUSPENSION MAY BE THE MINIMUM PASSING
GRADE IN THOSE CLASSES.

MEDIACENTER/GENERAL PURPOSECOMPUTER LAB

The Lincoln High School Media Center and General Purpose Lab are open daily for student
use from 7:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. All students are welcome to use the resources available in the
media center.
Students are required to sign in upon entering. During scheduled class time, students must
present a pass at the check-out desk. Food and drink are not allowed in the media center.
Compliance with all school policies is expected.

5
The main purpose of the computers in the media center and general purpose lab is for
educational use. Due to the Child Internet Protection Act (CIPA) and bandwidth limitations,
students are asked to refrain from the following activities:
• playing games

Students and staff are expected to follow “LPS District Computer Use” Guidelines. Personal
printing carries a required charge of five cents per page.

PASSES/LEAVING CLASS
Students are expected to remain in class the entire time. Permission to leave is at the
discretion of the teacher. A student must have a pass signed by the teacher when leaving a
class. This handbook/planner serves as a hall pass. Campus security or other staff members
will ask to see a pass if a student is in the hall during class time. Students are required to
comply with requests of staff members. If no pass is shown, the student will be returned to
class or taken to the office, room 204.
Students are required to sign in and record the arrival time on the sign-in sheet when
going to the media center, the health office, the counseling center, and room 204. Students
must also sign out when leaving these areas.

RESPONSIBILITIES OF STUDENTS
DISCIPLINE — DUE PROCESS

to maintain a school atmosphere which is conducive to learning. In order to achieve this,
Lincoln High will continue to review and distribute a set of reasonable and fair rules and

of the new semester.

SEARCHES OF STUDENTS AND PROPERTY

(Regulation 5420.7)
In maintaining discipline and providing a safe environment for students and staff, district
employees are responsible for obeying and enforcing compliance with state statutes, policies
and administrative rules. School administrators or designees are authorized to conduct
searches of students and their property as well as property of the district in order to enforce
compliance with statutes, policies and rules.
A search may be conducted when an administrator or designee determines there is reason to
believe it could disclose evidence of the violation of a statute, policy or rule. Administrators
or designees are also authorized to conduct area-wide searches (e.g., searches of all student
lockers) on the same basis and for reasons which include, but are not limited to, safety, health
and discovery of the violation of a statute, policy or rule. Student lockers, desks, and other
such property are owned by the school. The school exercises exclusive control over school
property, and students should not expect privacy regarding items placed in school property
because school property is subject to search at any time by school officials. Students are
responsible for whatever is contained in lockers and desks issued or made available to them
by the school.
When a search is part of a criminal investigation conducted in cooperation with police or law
enforcement, or is intended to discover evidence to be used exclusively in a criminal
proceeding, the police or law enforcement official shall be made responsible for the search.
Vehicles parked on LHS property are subject to search by the administration.

9
STUDENT ASSISTANTS
Student assistants will be regularly assigned to teachers by the office after the teacher has
requested such service and has approved the individual student. Students will serve as
assistants only during the school day. Two and one half (2.5) credits may be earned each
semester.

STUDENT PHOTO ID CARDS

The Board of Education recently adopted Lincoln Public Schools (LPS) Regulation 6412.1,
which requires all high school students to visually display their official LPS student photo
identification (ID) cards. The visibly displayed ID cards add another dimension of safety and
security to help identify students who are associated with each school. The ID cards are used
as an automated way for students to access their lunch accounts and pay for their school
lunches. Additionally, the ID cards help to build positive relationships between students and
staff at larger schools where staff members do not always have the opportunity to know every
student’s name.
Students are required to wear their school ID cards at all times in school. This practice
requires that students wear ID badges on break-away lanyards worn around their necks.
Appropriate adjustments will be made when students are in certain specific courses such as
physical education, industrial arts, etc.
During locker check-out days in July 2010, students will have their pictures taken; issued ID
cards and school lanyards to visibly display their ID cards. If a student forgets to bring the ID
card to school, he or she will be given an opportunity to receive a temporary or a permanent
ID replacement card. There is no cost to the students for these initial ID cards and lanyards.
Students are assessed a fee for replacement ID cards and lanyards.
The practice of wearing and displaying identification is now a common requirement in many
of our businesses and organizations. The world is changing and we need to do all we can to
maintain safety and security. Being able to identify people who belong in our building is a
critical step towards that process. More information and specific detail regarding LPS
Regulation 6412.1 can be accessed from the district office.

STUDENT RECORDS
Major records are maintained for each student at Lincoln High. They are:
Permanent Individual Record – The P.I.R. is maintained in the counseling center and is the
school’s permanent record of courses taken, grades achieved, credit earned, SAT, and ACT.
It is from this record that transcripts are made for educational or employment purposes.
Students wishing to have transcripts of this record forwarded to agencies or individuals
outside of the school may request this of a counselor or the registrar.
The Attendance Record – This record is maintained in the attendance office and provides a
record of the student’s attendance on a daily and period by period basis. This record is
utilized in reporting perfect attendance and excessive absenteeism to parents.

10
The Health Record – This record is maintained by the school nurse and is located in the
health office. Upon graduation from high school, students receive a copy of their
immunization record.
Conduct and Behavior Records – Records that are maintained as a result of inappropriate
student behavior may, depending upon the nature of the inappropriate behavior, be
maintained from one year to the next.
The No Child Left Behind Act requires the school district to protect the privacy of student
records. Further information about privacy and the district’s policies are found in the Board
Policy Manual.15

SUPPLIES, EQUIPMENT, FEES

All required books, supplies, and equipment including student planner and ID are supplied
free to all students. Students should furnish their own notebooks, pencils, pens and other
items. Students are required to bring books/supplies/materials to each class daily. This
handbook/planner is one of the required daily supplies students must have. Students are
responsible for paying for any lost or stolen books, supplies, and equipment checked out to
them. Students who have not returned materials or paid fines may not be allowed to
participate in activities or clubs until fines are paid or arrangements made to pay them. The
district’s fee waiver policy is to provide fee waivers according to the Public Elementary and
Secondary Student Fee Authorization Act (Policy 5520). For more information go to room
204.

TARDY CONSEQUENCES
A student will be considered tardy if she/he is not in the classroom at the designated start
time. Excessive tardiness is viewed as a discipline problem resulting in consequences
determined by the teacher and administrator.

TELEPHONE USE AND MESSAGES

Students will be called from class to the telephone only when it has been determined that
an emergency exists. Emergency messages from parents will be delivered immediately.
Non-emergency messages from parents will be distributed to students as soon as possible.
Except in emergencies, students will return telephone messages on their own time, e.g.
between classes, during lunch, before or after school. Pay phones are located by the main
office and Johnson Gym Hall. Student use of classroom phones is at teacher discretion.
Students may not use cellular phones and pagers during the school day, periods 2-8, this
includes exam days.

11
VALUABLES
Students should not bring large amounts of money or other valuable items to school. Lincoln
High School or Lincoln Public Schools is not responsible for lost or stolen articles from
lockers, vehicles or other locations. (Policy 5420.1)

VISITORS
Parents or legal guardians of students are invited to visit school. Arrangements for all
visitations should be made in advance of the actual visit. Students may not bring non-LHS
students or family members to visit school.
All visitors shall report to the security entrance monitor, upon entering the building, sign in
and receive visitor badge. There is limited parking for visitors in the north lot. Upon signing
in, visitors should include license plate number, make and model of vehicle to avoid towing.

WEIGHTED GRADES
Weighted grades are given for designated district-wide high school courses (see also
GRADES). Courses which offer weighted grades are selected by a district committee and
reviewed yearly. More information on weighted grades and graduation requirements is
available in the counseling center.
