Today we will be covering a very important topic from the general knowledge

section that is- Important points about Census of India. The post is very helpful for
the upcoming Railway  and SSC Exam 2016.

Census 2011 is the 15 Census of India since 1872. The motto of census 2011 was
'Our
All SSC Census, Our future'.
Exams

The population of the country as per the provisional gures of Census 2011 is
1210.19 million of which 623.72 million (51.54%) are males and 586.46 million
(48.46%) are females.
Sex Ratio (Females per 1000 Males)

Sex ration in India - 940

State with Highest Female Sex Ratio- Kerala (1084)
State with Lowest Female Sex Ratio- Haryana( 861)
UT with Highest Female Sex Ratio- Pondicherry(1038)
UT with Lowest Female Sex Ratio- Daman & Diu( 618)
Three major States (J&K, Bihar & Gujarat) have shown decline in sex ratio as
compared to Census 2001.

Uttar Pradesh (199.5 million) is the most populous State in the country
followed by Maharashtra with 112 million.
State with Lowest Population-Sikkim (6,07,688)

Literacy Rate

Total Person Literacy Rate- 74%

State with Highest Literacy Rate - Kerala (93.11%) (In September 2013 Tripura
topped the literacy rate with with 94.65% per cent)
State with Lowest Literacy Rate- Bihar (63.82%)
UT with Highest Literacy Rate- Lakshadweep (86.7%)
UT with Lowest Literacy Rate- Dadra & Nagar Haveli (57.6%)
District with Highest Literacy Rate-Aizwal, Mizoram (96.5%)
District with Lowest Literacy Rate-Dantewada Chhattisgarh (30.17%)

Density of Population (person per sq km)

Density of Population in India- 382

Highest Density in State- Delhi (11297)
Lowest Density in State- Arunachal Pradesh (17)

The percentage decadal growth rates of the six most populous States have
declined during 2001-2011 compared to 1991-2001:

Uttar Pradesh (25.85% to 20.09%)

Maharashtra (22.73% to 15.99%)
Bihar (28.62% to 25.07%)
West Bengal (17.77 % to 13.93%)
Andhra Pradesh (14.59% to 11.10%)
Madhya Pradesh (24.26% to 20.30%)

Note: The biggest shock in this census is the decline in the child gender ratio at
914 girls (up to six years) for every 1000 boys. This is the lowest since
Independence and it looks like a precipitous drop from a high of 976 girls in the
1961 census.
