Doctors (medical staff)

You may be treated by a number of doctors during your hospital stay – the consultant
(specialist), the registrar and the resident. Together they assess and manage your medical care.
Depending on which hospital you are in, you may also be treated by interns and student
doctors who work under the supervision of the senior doctors.

Doctors – roles and responsibilities

Doctors have different roles and responsibilities based on their level of experience and their
medical specialty.

These roles include:

 senior consultants – specialist doctors who see patients at specific times

 registrars – senior doctors who supervise residents, interns and students
 residents – look after patients on the ward and are in training for specialisation
 interns – have completed their studies and are now finishing their final year in hospital
 student doctors – undergraduate medical students.

The resident is based on the ward and is typically the doctor you will see most often. The
registrar is the ward’s senior doctor and is usually contactable on site, while the senior
consultant (or specialist) attends ward rounds and meetings at specific times.

Job Description

Pediatric doctors specialize in the treatment of children from birth to early adulthood. They
provide routine preventive health examinations, and diagnose and treat a wide range of
illnesses. From giving childhood immunizations and treating minor injuries to advising
teenagers about reproductive health, the job is never the same from day to day. Even solo
practitioners have staff, such as nurses or medical assistants, to help with providing care, but
pediatricians who work for health care organizations often work in a team setting, consulting
with colleagues on patient care. The job typically requires long hours, and many doctors find
themselves called to emergency situations at any time of the day or night.
Responsibilities

While a staff is on hand to help with administrative duties, such as billing, insurance and
records administration, a pediatrician still oversees the process and typically spends many
hours working on patient charts and other paperwork. When patients need care beyond the
routine, pediatric doctors coordinate that care with specialists and hospitals. Because the
patients are minors, a large part of the job consists of consulting and advising parents and
guardians on health care topics, including explaining treatments and procedures.
