ASEAN

The Association of Southeast Asian Nations is a geo-political and economic

organization of 10 countries located in Southeast Asia, which was formed on 8
August 1967 by Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore and Thailand. Since
then, membership has expanded to include Brunei, Burma (Myanmar), Cambodia,
Laos, and Vietnam. Its aims include the acceleration of economic growth, social
progress, cultural development among its members, the protection of the peace and
stability of the region, and to provide opportunities for member countries to discuss
differences peacefully.
ASEAN was preceded by an organization called the Association of Southeast
Asia, commonly called ASA, an alliance consisting of the Philippines, Malaysia and
Thailand that was formed in 1961. The bloc itself, however, was established on 8
August 1967, when foreign ministers of five countries– Indonesia, Malaysia, the
Philippines, Singapore, and Thailand– met at the Thai Department of Foreign Affairs
building in Bangkok and signed the ASEAN Declaration, more commonly known as
the Bangkok Declaration.
The motivations for the birth of ASEAN were so that its members’ governing
elite could concentrate on nation building, the common fear of communism, reduced
faith in or mistrust of external powers in the 1960s, as well as a desire for economic
development; not to mention Indonesia’s ambition to become a regional hegemonic
through regional cooperation and the hope on the part of Malaysia and Singapore to
constrain Indonesia and bring it into a more cooperative framework.

BRUNAI DARUSSALAM
Brunei Darussalam is a small country located in Southeast Asia. Located on
the northern island of Borneo / Kalimantan and is bordered by Malaysia. Brunei
consists of two parts separated by the Malaysian mainland. The country is famous for
its prosperity and firmness in implementing the Islamic Shari'a, both in government
and social life.
Borneo name given by the English under the name of this region in the past because
the Europeans to trade through the port in Brunei as the largest commercial airports
on the island.
Under Brunei's 1959 constitution, His Majesty Paduka Seri Baginda Sultan
Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu'izzaddin Waddaulah is the head of state with full executive
authority, including emergency powers, since 1962.
The Sultan's role is enshrined in the national ideology known as Melayu
Islam Beraja(MIB), or Malay Muslim Monarchy. The country has been under
hypothetical martial law since Brunei Revolt of 1962.
The media are extremely pro-government and the Royal family retains a
venerated status within the country.
Brunei culture as similar to Malay culture, with strong influences from
Hinduism and Islam, but look more conservative than Malaysia. Sales and use of
alcohol are forbidden, by an outsider and non-Muslims allowed to bring in 12 beers
and two bottles of alcoholic beverages every time they enter this country. After the
entry ban in the early 1990s, all pubs and nightclubs were forced to close.

MY MIND

Brunei Darussalam is one of the countries rich of oil mining. This country has
a different habit with countries such as Indonesia despite having the same culture is
Malay culture, because this country is a country rich and prosperous. These countries
ban alcohol, this is a rare thing, because as a country where rich people are, usually
they like to get drunk, and other bad things.

MY MIND

Thailand is a country that exists at many stupas so called state "thousand

pagodas". head of state is the prime minister, not a king. I think this is good, because
the select on the basis of the election not because of lineage. from some articles I read
about thailand yand, I conclude that Thailand is very much culture and interesting, but
not as diverse as Indonesia. it is because thailad standing from one kingdom, not a
combination of several kingdoms in the past.
