ELEC2100: Signals and Systems

Course Format

Spring 2018

Instructors: Albert K. Wong, Levent Yobas

AKW
Use of Language and Mathematical Relationships

• ELEC2100 is about learning a set of languages (mathematics, English, and Matlab) and the
practice of the use of a fundamental set of mathematical relationships to model engineering
problems related to signal processing, communication, and control
• There will be a lot of mathematical symbols but the course is not about solving math problems.
This course is about the practice of the use of the language.
• We will solve problems to demonstrate the understanding of the language, but ELEC2100 is
not about mathematical problem solving, it is about the use of language.
• The mathematical relationships that we will use are those that you should have already
learned. They are summarized in a “Key Mathematical Relationships” handout.

Face-to-Face Components

Class Meet
• Weekly 1.5-hour face-to-face session for
- Concepts review
- Group-based exercise
- Exercise review
- Individual exercise

Tutorial
• Weekly 50-minute tutorial for teaching associate to present summaries,
examples, and Matlab instruction

Lab

Before the Class Meet
• After watching the video lectures of the week, complete the online
self-check (not graded but recorded for student progress monitoring)

Work on the self-check questions

Before the Class Meet
• Check if you have achieved the Learning Objectives before the Class
Meet. You will be asked to solve problems in a group and afterwards
individually in class.
During the Class Meet

• Review of key video lecture concepts by instructor (20 mins)

• Group-based exercise (20 mins). Students form groups of 4 to work on

a small number of sample problems. Submit and graded on per-group
basis. Best 6 of 11 counted for individual students.

• Review of example problems by instructor (10 mins).

• Individual exercise (20 mins). Students to work on sample problems
individually. Submit and graded individually. Best 6 of 11.
Tutorial

• Conducted by Teaching Associate

• Summaries and examples
• Matlab instructions and review of pre-lab exercises
Lab

• 4 individual-based 1-hour lab sessions over the semester (refer to

CANVAS for schedule)
• Complete pre-lab exercise before each lab session
• A 50-minute Matlab quiz in Week 13
