PREFACE

This standard or specification is a revision or an overlay to a Saudi Aramco Engineering

Standard, SAES, or a Saudi Aramco Materials System Specification, SAMSS for the
scope of the Yanbu Export Refinery Project, YERP, unless specifically defined as a New
document. A YERP specification consists of a revision or an overlay and the Saudi
Aramco (SA) document with the same name. An overlay establishes if there are any
required changes to the SA document and specifically defines the changes. If the SA
document is to be used without any changes the overlay will state there are no changes
required. If the document is a new YERP document, with no reference to a SA standard,
the overlay will state it.

The YERP Specification Index identifies which YERP documents are new and the ones
that relate to SA documents that are unchanged, changed, or deleted.

All references to SA procedures, specifications and standards are to be defined as

references to YERP procedures, specifications and standards unless specifically stated
otherwise in the overlay.

All references to SA organizations are to be defined as the YERP Management Team.

Interpret the following as specified:

x Revise – A specific revision to a SA paragraph or sentence as noted in this
specification.
x Add – Continuation of an SA paragraph with an overlay requirement.
x Substitute – Replace the SA paragraph in entirety by the overlay requirement.
x New – New paragraph number in the overlay with no corresponding SA paragraph.
x Delete – SA paragraph is deleted by the overlay.

REVISION

This is a new YERP document that replaces Saudi Aramco Engineering Standard
SAES-L-105, Piping Material Specifications, 30 March, 2005.

ATTACHMENT

None - This is a “stand alone” document that replaces SAES-L-105.

5.0 DESIGN

5.1 General

5.1.1 All piping shall be designed in accordance with the applicable ASME B31 Code as specified
in the individual line classes as supplemented by: YERP-SAES-L-100, “Applicable Codes
and Standards for Pressure Piping”, YERP-SAES-L-109, “Selection of Flanges, Stud Bolts
and Gaskets”, YERP-SAES-L-110, “Limitations on Piping Joints”, YERP-SAES-L-310,
“Design of Plant Piping” YERP-SAES-L-410, “Design of Pipelines”, and YERP-SAES-L-610,
“Nonmetallic Piping Systems”.

5.1.2 Piping immediately attached to boiler components shall be designed in accordance with
ASME Section I, Fig. PG-58.3.1.

5.1.3 Feedwater piping upstream and steam piping downstream of ASME Section I shall be
designed in accordance with ASME B31.3. Boiler utility P&ID's shall show these Code
breaks.

5.1.4 Wall thickness shown in the Piping Material Classes (PMC’s) contained herein are defined in
two ways. As a minimum wall schedule or wall thickness (for small pipe and fitting sizes) or
as a variable “calculate wall” (for large diameter pipe and fittings). Contractor is
responsible for final selection of wall thickness based on PMC requirements for the items
indicated “calculate wall”. Wall thickness shown in the PMC’s shall not be changed by
contractor without issuing a deviation request as per YERP-SAEP-302, Instructions for
Obtaining Waiver of Mandatory YERP Requirements. Where the “calculate wall” is shown,
the wall thicknesses are to be calculated by the contractor. Contractors to submit the wall
thickness calculation procedure, wall thickness calculations and the line list for audit.

5.1.5 Wall thicknesses or wall schedules given in the line lists for each unit are provided for
reference only. The Piping Material Classes (PMC’s) thicknesses take precedence in case
of conflicts. Preliminary wall thicknesses have been shown in the line list for line sizes that
are designated “calculate wall” in the PMC. In this last case the contractor must perform a
pipe wall thickness calculation rather than using the reference thickness shown in the line
list. Any updating, modification or change to be incorporated in the PMCs shall be done by
YERP PMT, who will be the responsible to maintain these documents updated and available
to all contractors.

5.1.6 Request for additional information or updating of the PMCs should be treated also as a
deviation of these documents. Contractor shall issue a deviation request as per
YERP-SAEP-302, Instructions for Obtaining Waiver of Mandatory YERP Requirements.

5.1.7 Contractor’s project specific PMC’s shall be submitted for review as soon as they are
available.

1/2 except tubing and piping used in Category D Fluid, individual instrument leads, pump
and compressor auxiliary piping, steam tracing, and for reduction at instruments or other
equipment having connections smaller than NPS 1/2.

5.4.2 Pipe sizes: 1¼", 2½", 3½" and 5" shall not be used except for connections to equipment
requiring these sizes.

5.4.3 Carbon steel piping materials in line classes specify low yield strength materials, such as
grade B. For repairs and maintenance when low yield strength materials are not available,
high yield strength materials: X42 through X60, as listed in ASME B31.3 may be substituted.

5.4.4 Seamless or submerged-arc, straight or spiral seam-welded pipes shall be used within plant
limits for piping designed to the ASME B31.3 code.

5.4.5 Electrical Resistance Welded (ERW) and high frequency induction welded pipe in addition to
seamless and welded pipe with straight or spiral seam are permitted outside process plant
limits for piping designed to ASME B31.4 and B31.8 codes.
