Commonly used dental terms

The following is a list of dental terms:
 

amalgam 
 
a mixture of mercury and silver used as a tooth filling
 
bridge 
 
a man­made replacement for one or more teeth
 
caries 
 
small holes in the teeth caused by tooth decay
 
filling 
 
material used to fill a hole in a tooth
 
impacted tooth 
 
a tooth that is not able to come out of the gums completely because there is no space for it in the mouth 
 
plaque 
 
a colorless, odorless sticky film of bacteria on the teeth which causes tooth decay
 
radiograph 
 
a picture taken using radiation; an x­ray
 
root canal therapy 
 
a procedure that removes the nerve of a badly decayed tooth and replaces it with a filling
 
veneer 
 
plastic or porcelain covering for a tooth to make it look better
 
wisdom tooth 
 
the third molar, which appears when a person is around 17 to 25 years old
