Factors Affecting Cigarette Smoking among Selected Senior High School Students of
Technological Institute of the Philippines Quezon City

Abstract

Cigarette smoking is widely used by the adolescents nowadays. It affects the physical
and mental abilities of a person who practices smoking. It is considered as the largest
preventable risk from being in a state of being unhealthy. Way back then, only adults are the
ones having vices. Cigarette smoking influences the way of living of one person in the society.
As time passes by, teenagers share the part that’s having vice and it can’t be done without any
reasons, assuming that there are different reasons why adolescents began to smoke. Therefore,
this study was conducted for the purpose of determining the factors that affect teenagers to
smoke cigarette. A Qualitative study, a case study in nature was conducted to determine the
factors that affect the selected Grade 11 Senior High School students of Technological Institute
of the Philippines Quezon City to smoke cigarette. In order for this study to succeed, the study
used a non-probability technique which is a purposive type, this technique was used for the
reason that this study aims to focus on the characteristics of the respondents. This study was
conducted within the premises of Technological Institute of the Philippines Quezon City
campus, wherein the participants spend most of their time. A total of 300 respondents were
given a survey to determine if they are smokers or not. The participants’ age bracket is between
16-18 years old. After the survey was conducted, the participants were selected according to
their exposure and experience to cigarette smoking and to the frequency of smoking cigarette
within the past 30 days and were interviewed. This study found out that most of the students
who smoke cigarette were motivated by poor control in their emotions or emotional distress,
and others factors are: peer pressure, self-initiation and curiosity, identity formed, and familial
factors. This study supports the previous studies that determine the factors that affect the
teenagers to smoke cigarette and at the same time contributes new factors that motivate
students to smoke cigarette which are self-initiation and curiosity.

Cigarette smoking affects the abilities of a person physically and mentally, it is also the
largest preventable risk from being unhealthy. Since it is widely used, teenagers have also taken
part in smoking. It has a strong influence in the society thus teenagers are starting to smoke
unlike way back then when only adults do. The researchers assume that there are reasons why
adolescents began smoking. This study aims to determine those factors that affect teenagers
which lead them to smoking. The design that the researchers used to carry out the research is a
case study. They used a purposive type of survey in gathering data among their respondents. As
the name suggests, the researchers sought respondents who were qualified to take part in the
study. The study was conducted in the premises of Technological Institute of the Philippines
Quezon City campus seeing that the respondents of the study are selected grade 11 students of
T.I.P. Quezon City. After carrying out the survey, the results showed different factors that
support studies that were conducted before this research like peer pressure, poor control in
their emotions, and others. The study also contributed and added new factors such as self-
initiation and curiosity.
