LESSON PLAN IN MATHEMATICS VII

I. OBJECTIVES
At the end of the lesson, students should be able to:
 Determine the proper order of operations;
 Perform operations in a series in proper order; and
 Evaluate an algebraic expression for given values of the variables

II. SUBJECT MATTER

Topic: Series of Operations
Reference: Cruz, Integrative Mathematics through the Experiential Approach, pp. 61-63
Materials: Laptop, chalk and board

III. PROCEDURE
A. Pre-developmental
Prayer
Checking of Attendance
Motivation

I have here a picture. What can you say about it?

In reaching our goals we follow a steady step-by-
step procedure. First, we must identify the need. Second,
we must understand and comprehend each situation to
achieved the desired goals.

B. Developmental
Presentation of the Lesson
I have here a group of numbers. What do you think is the value of this
expression?

52 – 2 ( 10 – 8 ) + 4  7

There may be different answers depending on which operation is being

used first. And that’s what you are about to learn to day, the proper order of
doing the mathematical operations.
Discussion Proper
Considering the example given,

52 – 2 ( 10 – 8 ) + 4  7

Set A Set B
52 = 25 = 25 – 2 ( 2 ) + 28
25 – 2 = 23 = 25 – 4 + 28
23  10 = 230 = 49
230 – 8 = 222
222 + 4 = 226
226  7 = 1 582

Guide Questions:
a. Look at the 2 sets of computation, what do you notice in Set A? What
are the operation being used ? Is the answer correct?
b. How about in Set B, what do you notice? Is the solution being
prolonged? What are the operations being used ? Is the answer
correct?
c. How did Set A differ from Set B? Which do you think is the right way
to solve algebraic expressions?

Analysis
In a series of operations where grouping is indicated by a parenthesis, it
is relatively easy to perform the operation. But if the grouping is not indicated,
one may tend to solve it in the order the operations appear. Students may
arrive at the wrong answer.
In such cases the rule to remember is PEMDAS
P = parenthesis
E = exponent
M = multiplication
D = division
A = addition
S = subtraction
The acronym means that:
a. If there is a parenthesis, the quantity inside should first be
evaluated
b. Expressions with exponents should be simplied first
c. Multiplication and/or division should be done first before addition
and/or subtration.
Application
Let’s take other examples.
1) 9  2 + 6 ÷ 3 – 8
= 18 + 2 – 18
= 20 – 18
=2

2) -6 + 22  7 + 10
= -6 + 4  7 + 10
= -6 + 28 + 10
= 32

3) 2x2 – 5x ÷ 2 , if x = 4
= 2(4)2 – 5(4) ÷ 2
= 2(16) – 20 ÷ 2
= 32 – 10
= 20

4) 52 – x ÷ 3 + y  7, if x = 6, y = 2
= 52 – (6) ÷ 3 + 2  7
= 25 – 2 + 14
= 37

5) –a2b + b (a – 4) – a ÷ b, if a = 8 , b = 4
= –82  4 + 4 (8 – 4) – 8 ÷ 4
= –82  4 + 4 (8 – 4) – 8 ÷ 4
= -64  4 + 16 – 2
= 270

C. Post-developmental
Generalization
Can you tell what you have learned today?
When solving series of operations, grouped or not, we must always remember
the rule PEMDAS: parenthesis; exponent; multiplication; division; addition; and
subtraction in order for us to arrive at the correct answer. Following the sequence of
the operations as it is will not lead us to the correct answer.

IV. ASSESSMENT
Evaluate each expression.
1) 2 – 3 ( 8 – 11 ) + 32 ÷ 2 + 2
2) 62 + [ 3 ( 2 – 5 ) ] – 8 ÷ 4
3) x2 + 3x ( x – 5 ) + 12 , if x = 4
4) ab2 + b + 18 , if a = 2, b = 5
