Overall it was an average experience. I got an opportunity to work on two research papers of my
professor. The work, I felt was of moderately good quality and I got to learn a few new things, and I
got a first hand experience to how research papers are written as well as submission procedure to
journals. But if your prof is making you write a research paper, be ready to type the whole thing
(which includes various drafts) on word/latex. This can be very tedious and frustrating and I felt a lot
of my time was wasted on this, which I could have utilized to learn many more new things. Also
make sure that you do proper research about the professor you are applying to (look up his/her
papers on google scholar, the number of citations he/she has, how frequently does he/she publish)

The internship has given me an opportunity to learn the techniques of molecular biology for cloning
genes of interest and analyse the data that has been generated in the process. I got a better insight
into these techniques because of the lab component in this internship where I could go beyond the
boundaries of a textbook to practise the skills I had acquired. I could learn about the operations of a
bioreactor while scaling up my project in it. The presentations I have given to show my work
progress from time to time have helped me to organise myself better before a group. The poster
presentation given at the end has taught me how to showcase the work I did here effectively and
concisely. Besides these technical skills I also got to know about the culture that is prevalent in the

I wanted to try out and explore biology. I had no set goals in mind, or any particular research
problem. I approached a few BSBE professors, and finally joined Prof. D.S. Katti's lab. Benefit of
doing a research intern at IITK is that you make a lot of contacts and get acquainted with facilities
available, so you can plan your research work during semesters more easily. It's a myth that
research projects done while staying back here are fraud. It all depends on you, how you take it. For
me it was a wonderful learning experience. Being at home, you can try out different things without
much restrictions.

Awesome experience. Learnt a lot about my favourite area of wireless communications. The project

SURGE for second year students is based on CPI at end of three semesters. One has to talk with the
professor before applying, who the person wants to work with during summer. One also requires a
couple of recommendations (for our batch one had to be written, other had to be verbal, both were
closed recommendations)

SURGE is a very good opportunity to get an idea about research and the kind of work involved in it.
The application process is easy, you just need to find a professor under whom you can carry out your
work but SURGE is not given to everyone. My experience was average. My work was mostly
theoretical, reading research papers and some coding. A lot actually depends on the professor and if
is takes interest and helps you then it would be great.

The experience was one to remember and cherish. IAS one was relatively easy to get as it is an
established summer research program while the Melbourne one needed a bit more doing. The
Kolkata project was mostly theoretical and it tested my ability to read and comprehend literature
while the Melbourne project was all about experimentation on industrial solutions from Dairy farms
in Australia. The kind of learning that you get from such internships is not merely restricted to
academics as it aslso allows you to grow as an individual and makes you learn a lot of things about
yourself and how things need to be done. Research interns are not that boring or tideous as
students presume them to be , especially if you are in a foreign land ;) .

If someone wants to pursue research or even wants to get a feel for research then SURGE research
program is one of the best programs for a second year student. The application for SURGE program
is easy although selection is quite difficult. You just have to contact a professor under whom you
want to do research project and fill the form and submit it to SURGE office. My experience under
SURGE was satisfactory and my mentor regularly guided me throughout my project. TALKS were
conducted under SURGE program which made us aware about the research work currently going on
in our campus in various departments.

Besides these, there are other recipients of SURGE which come from other colleges so you get a
chance to meet new people with interest in research. Also, interesting part is that all the SURGE
recipients are provided with one day to chill out which in our case was a movie show. Important
thing is that there are regular evaluations which provide incentive to the recipient of SURGE to
perform regularly. Also, we get sufficient time to learn extra things which in my case were swimming
and guitar learning and also we get the chance to enjoy the summers with our friends at the campus.

CMU certainly didn't disappoint me.It was a lifetime experience as I got a first hand taste of research

opportunity to interact with some of the best minds of the world and you get a whole lot of ideas

I got the opportunity to work with the Corporate Research Department of Siemens , Bangalore ,
through my Dad . Siemens actually has internship openings for three months long summer
Programme but that is generally for third year students.

Well, working with Siemens was a very wholesome experience as mine was a combination of
research work in a corporate environment. from basic corporate ethics to the hardcore research
work, it gave me a glimpse into two very different work environment in the same time span of three
months. I now have a clear thought whether i want to pursue research or go for a company profile.
The work environment at Siemens is extremely competitive and the people very helpful. Interns are
treated no less than an employee there. There i worked on real life problems which was way too
different from what we learn in classroom and labs. They also gave me an opportunity to deal with
the clients , attend meetings and events which helps you build solid networks with people of your
field of interests.Impressed by my work, My mentor also invited me to a conference to be held at
Siemens Headquarters , Germany.

Working with a big company has its own sets of perks, where travelling, accommodation and food is
never a problem in a totally new city that you have never been to. Working in world class
laboratories made my research work very comfortable and rewarding. Finally i co-authored a paper
with my mentor , which is soon to be published in a renowned materials science journal. The best
thing about getting a paper published or a patent approved at the Corporate Research Department
of Siemens (or any company for that matter) is that 'there is no funding problem', it is taken care by
the company itself.

I enjoyed the internship, It was bit frustrating at times when you just sit on your workstation for
hours, sipping coffee and just wait for the clock to reach 5 pm as quick as possible :p . But when you
get results and when you get appreciation from your managers everything seems to be very
productive. And yes one bad thing (may be good for someone) about a company internship is that
you can easily fool around with your work and still end up getting your internship certificate but
then its no use wasting three months and end up learning nothing . And remember in the interviews
for your third year internship, you will be asked about your second year internship in detail and they
will find out quickly whether you worked sincerely or not (At least it happened with me ). So, A
company internship in your second year is definitely a peak you can have in your C.V. It helps a lot in
future.

doing field work and working with multiple stakeholders towards implementation of the Right to

project had to work on a every aspect of the project, as the situation demanded. The work
satisfaction associated with this kind of work is always great but such projects are recommended for
those who are passionate towards policy issues and there is not much technical learning that can be

Wanted to see how much I would enjoy doing research in Maths. Had a good exposure to research
and how tough it can be.

Pros-

Experience of doing research independently.

Learn how to approach a tough problem.
Self realisation about career preferences.
Cons-

No teamwork(varies with different professors)

Got too theoretical(again depends on what you are doing)
In my case I researched an open problem, and so it was very tough. Try doing something easier.

Satisfaction : You need experiences to know what you want. I wanted a tough experience to realise if
I really love research. I surely got a tough one :) Also I learnt how to overcome depression and keep
going when you cant see anything. So I'm very satisfied.

My summer project was based on CFD and I had to learn working on some softwares like Ansys,
Tecplot etc. before starting. So it began with learning skills and I would say this is what 2nd yr.
summer is mainly about, you learn and broaden your skill set, get used to a research environment
and work experience with amazing seniors and Professor. I did the reading part (going through the
previous publications) during sem so summer was spent doing simulations on lab computers.

My project guide did not ask much about the progress (most of them don't because they are busy
with PHDs etc) but I was regular to show him results and ppts, this actually happens with everyone
and this is where the contribution of seniors came in. All of them had an experience of these initial
difficulties and also their doubt clearance used to come back with useful fundebazi.

Overall my experience was kind of an introduction to research environment, very satisfying

(although sun in summer doubles your workload) I continued the project as UGP so substantial
amount of work has also been done after summer. Some advice from my side would be that first-
talk to any senior after selecting 2/3 profs.(before you approach someone) second- try and finish the
studying and learning the software part in December/before summer (which can be done at home
also),third- better to try and work here in IITK itself if you are interested in core AE, or in institutes
like iisc etc., it is not common to get a core company internship after 2nd year (All my personal
opinion).

My mentors were not so great in my opinion, and they were not exactly completely aware of all the
techniques that could be used, and did not have a very good theoretical background.

However, it was still a good internship since I was myself in the early stages of learning in that
particular field, and it allowed me to explore a lot of ideas and techniques.

In any case, on the output side, it wasn't great. However, the learning through that process stays
with me, and I find myself grossly aware of a lot of techniques that are applied in that particular
field.

Thus, as a general suggestion, at the second year level, one should look for learning intensive
internship rather than output oriented internships.

summer intern in the beginning of January. After a number of exchanges through mails, I finally got
an intern in Uttarakhand. I chose it because of the huge project and the place. It was a 232 crore
project of Married Accomodation for Army persons. The client was Ministry of Defence, GoI.
As an Intern I learnt a lot about the activities going on a site. The project included construction of
1054 flats, water reservoir, etc. I learnt to apply my theoretical knowledge of CE242A related to
cement and concrete. I learnt the procedures involved in building construction from foundation to
terrace, from excavation of ground to finishing of building. I prepared estimates, bills and bar
bending schedules. Finally I compiled all that I saw and learned as a Internship Report.

After 50 days of internship, it gave me a feeling that spending sometime out, away from home and
campus to a new place help you grow as a person. You meet new people, visit new places, and
meanwhile learn new things.

Overall it was a very good learning experience.

We were given a project which required some very basic knowledge of cryptography and networks.
As we had not done these courses they gave us time to learn these from Coursera. The mentors
assigned to us very helpful.

I had done this internship for a period of two months and it included two parts- a literature review of
new construction technology for affordable housing and the core site work with basics of a few
softwares used in structural analysis. It was a really nice exposure to the realm of industry and how
exactly it functions. It gave me an idea of the technical knowledge essential for the betterment of
professional career.

I was working with R&D team in the wearable-tech start-up. My work was related to optimization in
tracking by GPS devices. I had to go through research papers in the beginning to study about the GPS
functionalities. Later on, I moved towards product development part which involved circuit
designing and integration of various sensors and micro-controller.

Last year, it came through SIPP. They shortlisted candidates based on projects and courses.
Interview was mostly technical around the past projects. You are expected to know most of the
thing about your project.

I got a good idea of electronics product development, indeed learning experience which involved
study in new field but required application of what you have learnt in the courses as well.

My mentors were quite supportive but they expect you to be hard-working and motivated to do
innovative work in wearable-tech field.

Overall, great experience at a fast growing start-up with decent work.

I did my 2nd year Core intern at LnT Delhi. I was posted in one of the biggest ongoing High rise
housing building projects thus got a huge exposure and experience. I learned the construction
artistry and various on-field off-field processes involved. It was a great experience and helped me in
streamlining my options.

If you are Civil Eng. student and you have interest in construction , you should for sure due a core
industrial intern as after that you would be able to judge if you truly like this field or not. What we
study surely has its physical application but things are bit different in the field.

By the end of 2nd year most of sophomore have no clue what to do ahead, so they join the herd and
take a summer project under professor. But it is seen in most cases that it doesn't turns out to be
that fruitful. So chose wisely, keeping in mind your interest and future options.

Best of luck !

My intern was basically what we would call a fraud intern. There was nothing to do there. Basically
that is an intern they offer to students who are looking for only a certificate.

My advice for you would be to try and get an intern in the field you want to pursue which would
really helpful for you in your 3rd year internship season. But very few of us know by 2nd year where
our interests lie. So staying back in the campus and taking two courses and possibly a project under
some professor is far far better than doing some useless intern. Doing courses in advance would
really ease your load in the coming semesters.

Do try for an intern initially though if you can get good one.

But strictly don't go for an intern in NFL.

As far as I have experienced, working in a start-up is like everything at once. Since you are generally
taken for a technical job, hence you definitely learn new things. But apart from that, since the
number of employees is so less, hence you get to know everything about the company and you learn
how companies develop. In my internship, the owners of the company were so kind-hearted that
they treated all the interns as employees of their firms, and we were given all sorts of jobs, technical
to marketing and from helping to leading, to chase deadlines made by ourselves. The best thing
about working in a start-up is that you work 24X7. This inculcates good working habits in you and
strong bonding with co-workers.

My experience was awesome. mPaani is a fast growing social enterprise startup. My job was mostly
software related. I worked alongside a small group of people there, who were a lot of fun. Since I
was part of such a small team, whatever I did had a very direct and tangible impact. Plus I got to
work on stuff which I had never tried before. The guys at mPaani were very welcoming and I
adjusted very easily. All in all, for me this internship was a very satisfying experience.

Zurepro.com is a Mumbai based startup which provides third party insurance and extended
warranty solutions for electronic gadgets(smartphones etc. ).

I got this intern through SPO. I had already worked for a start-up so my interview entirely revolved
around my past experience.

I was a part of business expansion program across 9 cities in India. As an Intern, my responsibility
was to identify, acquire and manage new retail partnerships through phone calls, in-person meetings
and presentations. We (a team of 4 interns from different IITs) had to establish a Mumbai based
startup in Delhi to set up roots for further expansion in North India. I also administered existing
merchant accounts, including the regular updating of data and analysis.

It was a very challenging task that looked seemingly impossible at the beginning. We started off as
11 interns from different IITs but only 4 of us could make it till the end. This was a work environment
in which one has to perform or depart.

As far as the learning is considered, first thing which I learnt was to survive in extremely horrible
conditions. Apart from this I brushed up my soft skills and learnt different ways to negotiate with
people and convince them. One thing which I liked about the intern was the amount of responsibility
that they gave us. We worked as if it was our own start-up and freely took major decisions.

Those who wish to have a first hand experience of working with a start-up, this is definitely an intern
to look forward.

I would be more than happy to help if anyone needs to talk in person.

Cheers!!

Background:-

I am very much into programming but when you have a look at companies in SURGE all good
companies will open for CSE, EE or MTH or else they would be in Web Development. I was more
interested in back-end development mainly in C++, JAVA or python.I applied in a two SIPP companies
halfheartedly but was rejected. I had talked with a Prof for a summer project as a backup. I was
actively looking for internships on Hello-Intern and Internshala.

Application:-

During the End-sems, a mail was forwarded regarding opening at Mech Mocha. Since it was game
development and required a C++ programmer I applied immediately. Consecutively I had also asked
a senior and he had set me up an interview with start up in Bangalore requiring student to set up
their payment gateway. Mech Mocha guys interviewed me in morning of 30th April and in the
afternoon the gave me a call that I was selected.

Preparation and Interview:-

I was revising mainly ESC-101 and 12std computer science (OOPs,pointers etc.). The questions asked
were quite basic like concept of OOPs, functions, pointers, arrays and they asked me to explain my
1st year summer project which I did well.

Internship:-

I learned a completely new programming language, Objective-C from scratch and worked towards
development of iOS app.I also gained an insight into life cycle of start-ups. Since the company was in
early stage but had funding. Had a wonderful experience there made new friends, traveled places
and enjoyed IIM-A campus.

You can find the game I worked on at this link. Give it a shot it is a good game.

I had a pretty great experience last summers at my internship. My intern was in a Financial
Brokerage Firm which had Portfolio Management and Risk Management back-office in New Delhi. I
got through some personal contacts and there was no properly designed intern program as such. I
had almost no knowledge about Finance. The best thing that happened was my mentor. Not only he
helped me with the project I was working on, he also guided me brilliantly throughout my two and a
half month intern. By the end of my intern I had worked extensively on Derivatives trading strategies
and Quantitative trading. Internship at a Financial company is very different from any research
project, as then you would work on current market scenarios, with deadlines and in a professional
environment.

My internship in Finance played a key role in getting me short listed and finally being selected for
internship (through SPO) in financial firms even with a very average CGPA.

The internship was in a 2011 incubated start-up placed in IIT Kanpur itself. It was not that hectic. My
mentor was in Bangalore so it was difficult to consult small doubts due to which I did not have much
workflow. I had to put in a lot of effort to clarify my doubts and proceed further. My project was to
develop a model to calculate CreditVar for banks. My project was interesting to me. Long stretches
of reading were boring but the application part of the project was exciting to work with. The best
part was that I ventured into a field which I enjoyed working in. All together it was a decent
experience for me.
