Common types of medication
Study the words for common types of medication.
medication
drugs used to remove pain or sickness
analgesic
relieves pain, like muscle pain, stomach cramps, or headaches. Examples: paracetamol (Panadol),
acetaminophen (Tylenol), and morphine
antacid
removes acidity in the stomach that causes stomachache. An example is calcium carbonate (Tums).
antibiotic
kills bacteria inside the body that cause infection. Antibiotics may be taken by mouth, injected with a needle, or
rubbed onto the skin (compare with antiseptic). Examples: penicillin, erythromycin, amoxicillin
antidiarrheal
relieves the symptoms of diarrhea or loose bowel movement
antifungal
kills fungi. Example: miconazole (Daktarin)
antiinflammatory (NSAID; nonsteroidal antiinflammatory drug)
brings down swelling; also removes the pain caused by the swelling. Examples: aspirin, ibuprofen (Advil), and mefenamic acid (Ponstan)
antihistamine
relieves allergy symptoms, such as rashes, itchy and/or watery eyes, sneezing, and runny nose. Examples: loratadine (Claritin) and
diphenhydramine hydrochloride (Benadryl)
antihypertensive
lowers blood pressure
antiparasitic
removes worms, amoeba, and other parasites in the body
antipyretic

lowers temperature when one has a fever. Paracetamol and aspirin are used as antipyretics.
antiseptic
kills bacteria and other microorganisms to prevent or remove sickness in the skin or mucus membranes. Antiseptics are not drunk or injected. They
are rubbed or poured onto the skin or mucus membrane (compare with antibiotics). Examples: alcohol, povidoneiodine (Betadine)
antivenom
used in snake bites to fight snake poison or venom
antitussive
stops the body's urge to cough (compare with expectorant)
bronchodilator
forces the airways in the lungs to widen to make breathing easier, especially for people having asthma attacks. Example: salbutamol (Ventolin)
decongestant
relieves a clogged nose so one can breathe freely. An example is phenylephrine (Sudafed).
expectorant
stops cough by loosening phlegm so that it can be removed from the body (compare with antitussive)
