Q2
a) Compare Diesel, Steam and Hydro power plants with respect to the following parameter.
i. Cost of power generation in OMAN
ii. Efficiency
iii. Design
iv. Pollution
Write answers in table with reason:
Answer: [4]
Parameter Diesel Power Plant Steam Power Plant Hydro Power Plant
Cost of power Less, because More More
generation in availability of fuel because availability because availability
OMAN in the Oman is of coal in the Oman of coal in the Oman
more is less is less
Efficiency Less because more Very Less because More, because less
heat losses more heat losses heat losses

Starting of power Fast because diesel Slow because prime Very fast because
plant engine prime mover mover speed can prime mover speed
not be changed can be changed
fastly fastly
Pollution More, because More, because No Pollution
smoke release when smoke release when
diesel burns coal burns

b) Explain the classification of transmission lines based on voltage level and distance. [4]

Answer:
1. Classification of OH power transmission lines according to voltage levels.

Low Voltage transmission line –: less than 1000V

Medium Voltage transmission line –: 1000 V to 33kV

High Voltage transmission line –: 33kV to 230 kV

Extra High Voltage transmission line -: 230kV to 800kV

Ultra High Voltage transmission line -: above 800kV

2. Types Of Transmission Line

The overhead transmission lines are classified as

i. Short transmission lines
– Length of the transmission line is up to 50km and operating voltage less than
20kV.
ii. Medium transmission line
– the length of the transmission line is between 50km -150 km and its operating
voltage is between 20kV and 100kV.
ii. Long transmission line
 Transmission line length above 150 km and operating voltage greater than
100kV.
 Capacitance is considered to be distributed over the transmission

e) Describe the Ring main distribution system. [4]

Ring main system:

 Primaries of the distribution transformer form a loop.
 Loop circuit starts from the sub-station bus-bars, makes a loop through the area to
be served and returns to the sub-station.
 In figure sub-station supplies to the closed feeder LMNOPQRS.
 Distributors are tapped from points M, O and Q of the feeder through distribution
transformers.

Q6 With a neat diagram, explain the operation of a Circuit Breaker, which do not permit [5]
high speed interruption.

Answer:
Oil Circuit Breaker. (OCB)
 A plain-break oil circuit breaker involves the simple process of separating the
contacts under the whole of the oil in the tank.
 There is no special system for arc control other than the increase in length caused
by the separation of contacts.
 The arc extinction occurs when a certain critical gap between the contacts is
reached
