LAMBERT Training and Events provides community education in a variety of aspects


of mental health awareness. The signature course is the 2 Day Mental Health First Aid
course in both the Generic and the Youth specific form. In addition to this a number of
shorter workshops and awareness sessions have been developed to provide community
training and literacy in mental health issues.
The training is provided by Rod Lambert, a Master Instructor in Mental Health First Aid
with extensive experience in mental health training in Tasmania since 2006. Rod is
passionate about presenting the human side of mental health in a positive and hopeful
context.

MENTAL HEALTH FIRST AID COURSES AVAILABLE


MENTAL HEALTH FIRST AID The course covers the following crisis situations
and developing mental health problems.
Crisis situations covered are: Mental health problems covered are:
* Suicidal thoughts & behaviours * Non-suicidal self-injury • Depression
* Panic attacks * Traumatic events • Anxiety disorders
* Severe psychotic states * Severe effects from drug misuse • Psychosis
* Severe effects from alcohol misuse * Aggressive behaviour • Substance misuse
Participants will learn the signs and symptoms of these mental health problems, where and how to get help
and what sort of help has been shown by research to be effective.
Course Format
This is a 12-hour course (4 modules each 3 hours). The delivery format is flexible.
Course participants receive a copy of the MHFA manual and other resources.

YOUTH MENTAL HEALTH FIRST AID The course covers the following crisis situations
and developing mental health problems.

* Suicidal thoughts & behaviours * Non-suicidal self-injury * Depression
* Panic attacks * Traumatic events * Anxiety disorders
* Severe psychotic states * Severe effects from drug misuse * Psychosis
* Severe effects from alcohol misuse * Aggressive behaviour * Substance misuse
* Eating disorders
Participants will learn the signs and symptoms of these mental health problems, where and how to get help
and what sort of help has been shown by research to be effective.
Course Format
This 14 hour course can be delivered in either
• a 2 day training package (7 hours per day)
• as 4 separate modules (3.5 hours each)
Participants receive a copy of the Youth MHFA manual and other resources.

COSTS: Individuals $150 per person (No GST)


Groups $150 per person (as above) for groups up to 10. For groups above this size the cost
can be negotiated. Recommended group size is between 10 and 25.

INDIVIDUAL WORKSHOPS AVAILABLE
These workshops are designed as general, non-clinical introductions to the
subject covered and are presented in an information and discussion format.
Introduction to Mental Health issues. (1.5, 3 or 5 hours)
This is a brief overview of common mental health issues—especially suited for those who
cannot find the training time for the full MHFA course.
Introduction to Adolescent MH issues (As above)
As above but focussing on Adolescent (12—18 Y.O.) issues.
Working with people living with mental illness (2 hours)
Especially designed for community services staff.
Stress and anxiety management (2 Hours)
Focussing on the difference between stress and anxiety and introducing some helpful
management strategies.
Introduction to Depression and its treatment (2 Hours)
An overview of the symptoms of, the different types of depression and the treatments
available.
Changing negative thinking and learning relaxation/mindfulness (2 hours)
A look at the common negative thinking patterns and some proven strategies to manage
anxious or depressed thoughts.
Grief and Loss (2 or 4 hours for an extended session)
An overview of the dynamics of grief and loss. What happens when grief gets “stuck” and
the connection between grief and depression. The extended session can give more time
for questions and focus on the practical needs and responses to a death.
Drugs and Mental Health (2 hours)
A general introduction to the effects of “mind-altering” drugs on the person using and their
mental health. An extended session is available that looks at more issues about managing
co-occurring drug and mental health issues.
Responding to self-harm (2 hours)
An introduction to self-harming behaviour—why it happens and how best to respond.
Bi-Polar disorder (2 hours)
An introduction to the various forms of this disorder, the symptoms and how to help some
one who is unwell.
Understanding Schizophrenia and psychotic illnesses (2 hours)
An introduction to the various forms of these disorders, the symptoms and how to help
some one who is unwell
Suicide awareness, prevention and response (2 hours)
A brief look at suicide risk and helpful responses.
Introducing Personality Disorders and Borderline PD (2 hours)
A brief look at PDs with a particular focus on Borderline Personality Disorder.
Please note: All and any topic can be “tailored” to meet your training needs.

COSTS: $500 for half a day and $800 for a full day (plus travel and accommodation costs
where applicable). Groups of up to 20 - resources provided to all participants.
