Basic Digital Photography Syllabus

Course Description
This course is a basic introduction to the concepts, tools and technology of digital imaging for
photography. Students will apply knowledge of camera techniques, composition and digital imaging
skills to create a series of project based photography artwork. Course objectives include:
 The history of Photography, Different Photographers
 Art elements and design principles
 The functions and parts of the camera
 Digital technology using the Canon 5Ti, Mac computers and Photoshop software
 Projects include: modern art, composition, viewpoints, cartooning, motion, Depth of Field, White Balance and
selective color.

Supplies Needed
 A 4 or 8GB flash drive
 A notebook/folder with paper for journaling and taking notes
 Please bring 1 ruler, 1 Clorox Wipes, and 1 Black Sharpie thick or thin

Assignment and Late Work Policy


In the visual arts world, there are deadlines and due dates. Because of this, art assignments will be
given due dates that students must adhere to in order to receive full credit.

Due Date: Signifies the end of in-class working time


Grace Period: The final project for each assignment must be turned in on the due date so students can
participate in a classroom critique. Each student will have one week “Grace Period” before a 25% late
penalty is applied. All late assignments can still be turned in until the end of the quarter with the late
penalty applied.

Make-up Work
It is the student’s responsibility to contact the teacher regarding work missed. Please refer to the
description in student handbook on page 14.

Plagiarism
A form of cheating that occurs when an individual uses another person’s ideas, expressions, or
writing as if they were his/her own. Please refer to the student handbook for consequences on page
24.
Grading Procedures
Grades will reflect the students’ ability to apply their photography knowledge through various
projects, assignments, tests and classroom participation. Grades are based on a cumulative point
total that aligns with a Rubric. Approximately 60% of your grade will be based on projects, 20%
assignments and tests, and 10% participation, and a 10% cumulative exam at the end of the
semester. Projects will be graded on the following:

 Follows project expectations and criteria/Rubric


 Craftsmanship and Attention to detail
 Effort of creativity and complexity, time and effort visually displayed
 Shows knowledge of subject matter

A (100-90%) Student work surpasses assignment outcomes. Initiative exceeds requirements. Improvement noticeable
B (89-80%) Student work is accurate and complete. Initiative is shown. Individual shows progress
C (79-70%) Student work is complete. Initiative meets the assignment requirement.
D (69-60%) Student work was attempted. Initiative is measureable.
F (59%- below) Student does not meet assignment criteria.

Attendance/Tardy Policy
The Art Department follows the school attendance/tardy policy printed in the student handbook.

Classroom Behavior and Participation Points


Each student will receive participation points. As long as the student comes to class on time, uses
their time productively, is respectful and responsible and follows the classroom rules they should
have no problem keeping these points. Participation points will be deducted per incident.

 Staying on Task
 Camera: Returning on time and using proper camera care
 Classroom Technology: Proper use of computers, phones, printer, etc.

Technology Policy
 Technology is welcome in the art room as long as it is supporting current classroom
projects/goals. Phones should be kept out of sight unless for teacher directed activity.
 Technology should NOT be used for games or personal communication during class time;
phone calls, text messaging, emails, etc.
 Charging will only be allowed at a designated area and is at the discretion of your teacher.
 Ear buds will only be allowed as needed for video viewing.
