Malaysian Standards & MS/IEC Standards

on Power Quality
9 September 2004
Organised by:
IEM Training Centre in Partnership with SIRIM’s TC8: Power Quality
Sponsored by: Suruhanjaya Tenaga (ST)
Supported by: Department of Standards Malaysia (DSM)

Objectives

To propagate the Malaysian Standards and MS/IEC Standards on Power Quality.

To create awareness among stakeholders on the implications of Power Quality.
To provide BEM Continuous Professional Development (i.e. CPD) opportunities for Professional Engineers.

SIRIM's Outreach Programme; And ST's aim of having informed stakeholders

The formation in 2001 of Technical Committee, No. 8 (i.e. TC8) was authorised by SIRIM's Industrial Standards
Committee - Electrical (i.e. ISC-E). TC8 deals with all issues of Power Quality. In just three years, TC8 has developed
and published eight Malaysian Standards. TC8 being very active, has a full on-going agenda to develop more and
other relevant standards that will form the family/ suite of standards which will address all aspects of power quality. To
keep abreast of international development, TC8 is an active participant and voting member of IEC's SC77A that deals
with the development of international standards on power quality.

Much has been said in the media about consumers' complaints on power quality. But, how well informed on power
quality are the power utilities, the consumers themselves, system designers and the Regulator (i.e. ST). Precisely for
this reasons, SIRIM's TC8; with the support and sponsorship of ST and DSM, has embarked upon an outreach
programme with the aim of publicizing all the relevant Standards that have a bearing on power quality. The aim is to
have informed stakeholders.
