INGLÉS IV

(2015-2016)

FIRST WORKSHOP: MORPHOLOGY

NAME: ____________________________________________________________________

Students have to choose a written literary text (1-3 pages long, fiction) and prepare a morphological
study of several lexical items which have not been discussed in class. In this first workshop (weeks 9
and 10), students will hand in the morphological study of the text and will give a 7-minute oral
presentation about the study they have carried out, providing personal conclusions of the tasks.
Students also have to submit a copy of the written text and highlight the lexical items that are analyzed
in tasks 1, 2 and 3.

TASKS

TASK 1. Choose 10 lexical items from the text and in each case: a) divide the word-form into morphs; b)
say whether the morphs are free or bound; c) say whether the affixes are prefixes or suffixes, inflectional
or derivational, and class-maintaining or class-changing; d) identify the root/s, stem and base/s; e) say
whether the form is simplex or complex, and if complex, whether a derivative or a compound. Do not use
abbreviations or initials when doing this exercise, but full words. Provide examples of different types of
word-forms (1 simplex form, 6 derivatives with different derivational affixes, 3 compounds).

TASK 2. Choose 8 compound words from the text (different from the ones used in task 1) and provide a
classification of each of them and their morphological meaning.

TASK 3. Choose 10 derivatives from the text (different from the ones used in task 1) and provide the
following information about 10 derivational affixes that can be found in those 10 derivatives: a)
classification of the affix; b) meaning of the affix; c) morphological definition of the derivative; d) source
of information (used to find data included in the affix record, other than class notes).

TASK 4. Using different written sources (literary texts, general books, newspapers, magazines,
advertisements, web pages, etc., but NOT dictionaries, encyclopedias, books or web pages on
morphology/linguistics), provide 20 examples of words that have undergone conversion, blending,
clipping, and acronyming (5 of each type) and explain the process of formation. You cannot provide
examples discussed in class or included in the practical activities and you have to provide a copy (printed
copy or a photocopy) of the sources highlighting the examples.
