ENSC320 Electric Circuits II

What this course is about?

! This course is closely linked to ensc380, linear

systems, and there is some overlap in the material

! 380 is a platform for control systems,

communications and signal processing, and the
backbone tools are the Fourier and z transforms

! 320 covers electrical and electromagnetic circuits

where the time domain is continuous (not discrete
or sampled), and the primary tools are the Laplace
transform and differential equations.

! Another tool is the language of circuits and much

of electrical engineering - complex numbers.

! Resistors: memoryless, inductors and capacitors

can be considered as having memory

! Impedance of a resistor:

! Impedance of a capacitor and an inductor:

Peliminaries

! Preliminaries from N&R Chapter 1 Chapter 1 –

Circuit Variables

! Read Section 1.1 Gives an overview of circuit theory

and a recipe for solving circuit problems

! Review Section 1.2 Review Tables 1.1 (SI units) and

1.2 (Derived units in SI) – and Table 1.3:-

Circuit variables: voltage and current

1. Voltage: energy per unit charge

2. Current: rate of change (flow) of charge

3. Power: rate of change (flow) of energy

4. Relationship between energy and power

Can P be negative?

ENSC 320 2015 Page 1.3 Rodney Vaughan Engineering Science, SFU, File: 320-2018-2_O1_v1.wpd
! Sign conventions for single circuit elements?

! Positive power indicates energy is being

dissipated in the circuit element. And negative
indicates the circuit is supplying power.

! Remember the conventions are not as consistent

as we would like, and it’s usually OK to make your
own personal convention as long as you lay out
all the definitions clearly.

Assessment Problem 1.3
Find the total charge entering terminal 1. (4000µC)

Starting point:-

Does this look right?

Assignment 0: Basic mathematical tools

This is homework, rather than an assignment. It will

not be marked and does not count towards your
grade. But you are welcome to ask questions about it.

As with the Preliminaries above, it is material that you

should know. But it is critical for this course that you
do not get held up because you are struggling with
the basic mathematical tools. If you struggle with
these items, then you may need to rethink your
investment in this course at the moment.

! Brush-up on j= and complex numbers:-

operating with polar and cartesian forms:

addition, subtraction, multiplication, division

! Complex roots of unity, general powers and roots

! Conjugations*, absolute value, triangle inequality,

Reference: any basic math text, Wikipedia, etc.

! For those interested in the history of complex

numbers, see this interesting web essay, which is
also a nice component to your brush-up:

! Brush-up on the Dirac delta function

! Brush-up on the Fourier transform

! Convolution and correlation

! Use of Matlab - if you do not know how to use it,

then learn it! It is quick and intuitive, and is an
indispensible tool for research engineers. It
evaluates mathematic functions and plots them
professionally with a minimum effort.

Example: test the mathematics with x=3.9, a=7.8

The mathematics:

The matlab:

%This is my comment line

clear all; close all
x=3.9;
a=7.8;
z1=(x^a)^(1/a)
z2=(x^(1/a))^(a)
>> z1 = 3.9000
>> z2 = 3.9000

Test the mathematics with x=-1, a=3.

! Draw a circuit diagram of the wiring which powers
your house or apartment. Try to use well accepted
or standard, symbols. If you are unsure of the
symbol, then also label the circuit element.

It should indicate how the wires are

connected, how the switches connect in the
circuit, how they are protected from overload,
and should indicate why, in a house with
dodgy wiring, when the fridge or some other
major appliance turns on, the lights dim a bit.

! Write out and calculate the admittance of a 10

Ohm resistor in series with a 10µ
µF capacitor

! Write out and calculate the impedance of a 15

Siemen conductance in parallel with a 10µ
µH
inductor

! The following examples are from [J.Cavers,

Refresher on Complex Numbers and Variables,
2004]

according to this equation:

Draw a graph of the step function, given by

Draw a depiction of:

How is the delta function defined?
