MECOSTA COUNTY – Much to
Tom and Connie Grant’s delight,
close to 1,000 pumpkins grew on
their one-acre pumpkin this year
– about double what the Rodney
farm yielded during the fall of
2009.
Tom Grant attributes last fall’s
low yield to the cooler-than-
average weather, which slowed
bee pollination of the plants.
The temperatures also made the
pumpkins that did develop, do so
slowly.
This year, however, it was
completely different story for the
gourds. The rain was consistent,
as was the warm weather, which
never became too hot.
“Last year was such a bad
year,” Grant said. “This year was
perfect for everything.”
The “everthing” Grant referred to
includes other Mecosta County
cash crops, such as hay and
corn.
“It seems to be two ends of
the spectrum we’ve seen in
two years,” Jerry Lindquist,
a Michigan State University
Extension agricultural educator in
Osceola County. “In my 28-year
career, this has probably been
the greatest growing season
from a crop-yield standpoint that
I have ever seen. ... These plants
didn’t lack for anything. They just
grew big fruits and big kernels of
corn.”

pest management professionals
conducted by the National
Pest Management Association
(NPMA) and the University of
Kentucky, 95 percent of U.S.

25 percent of them could say the
same thing in 1999.
Bed bugs are accomplished
hitchhikers. They travel in
suitcases and furniture, or by
attaching themselves to clothes.
Bed bugs can be found in any
place where humans gather in
groups, including movie theaters,
churches and libraries, as well as
places that see many travelers,
like hotels.
A visual inspection is the
best way to detect bug bugs.
Check beds and furniture when
checking into hotels, and inspect
your suitcase before bringing it
into your house. If you suspect
that you have bed bugs at home,
call a professional, as bed bugs
are the most difficult pest to treat.

monitoring systems (TPMS) are
now a standard safety feature on
all new cars in the United States.
TPMS automatically monitors tire
pressure and alerts the driver
when the pressure in one or
more tires becomes significantly
low -- and potentially dangerous.

be under-inflated, you cannot
rely on a tire’s appearance to

Performance
If a product doesn’t work, it
doesn’t matter that it is earth-

Green
Evaluating the green claims
of cleaning products can
also be difficult. Several
products as green, however
each uses different criteria
and specifications, based
on proprietary definitions
and internal reviews. One
designation, DfE (Design for the
Environment), is approved by
the US Environmental Protection
Agency (EPA). DfE-certified
products must meet rigorous
standards for biodegradability
and toxicity, health hazards,
storage and shipping limitations,
flammability, etc.
Companies also need to
consider how products are
packaged. Pre-measured
packaging, for example, can
contribute to a green initiative,
as it creates less waste.
Shipping and storage savings
can be significant also. Products
manufactured by Pak-It, LLC,
a subsidiary of JBI, Inc (OTC-
QX: JBII - News), come in
water-soluble packets. Because
they’re just packets of cleaning
concentrate and aren’t mixed
with water, there is less weight to
ship and space-saving storage.
Cost-Effective
The cost of cleaning products
should be evaluated on a total
cost of ownership basis since
so many factors contribute to
the overall goal of a clean retail
environment. Businesses can
make an estimate by choosing
one location and determining
how much money it would cost
to keep it clean for one year with
each product in consideration,
including storage costs, labor
and supplies.
One size does not fit all when
it comes to cleaning, especially
for multi-location retailers.
Consideration should be given
to seasonal changes in cleaning
needs as well as those based
on general geographic location.
National multi-location retailers
can generalize by classifying
stores in zones and considering
the unique needs of each zone to
ensure that the cleaning program
is effective. By calculating the
cost on an annual basis, any
seasonal impacts will be taken
into consideration.

BIG BUCK CONTEST
Mecosta County’s Oldest Big Buck Contest
Contest Rules
The contest for 2010 is a two category event, both archers and rifle hunters can participate. Archers harvesting a buck (only)
may enter by bringing the entire (no capes or heads) buck to our Pioneer Office, 115 N. Michigan Ave., Big Rapids, October
1st through the end of the archery season December 31, 2010. The buck will be measured and photographed during the hours
of 9 a.m. until 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. Rifle hunters begin their phase of the contest on November 15, 2010 and run
through the end of black-powder season. The same requirements and times apply.
Winners will be determined by a point system combining a measurement at the widest spread on the main beams
(outside spread) and the number of points (a point must be at least an inch in length). For Example: 8 points + 20 inch
outside width = 28 points.
Only bucks with four points or more or hunters with their first buck will be photographed. The photo will be published in
the Pioneer as soon as possible to the time of entry.
No entries from privately owned sanctuaries will be accepted.
Only whitetail deer qualify for the contest.
Only one entry per hunter unless the second buck is a contest prize contender in which case only one prize will be
awarded.
Prizes will be awarded at the Big Buck Award Dinner which will be announced at a later date.
Any entry that is suspected of being illegally taken will be referred to the Michigan Department of Natural resources.
The immediate families of Pioneer Group employees are not eligible to compete in the contest.
In case of a tie, the winner will be determined by the first Pioneer recorded entry.
