Dear Ma’am,
As per your request during our defense in Research 1, we have researched on methods of
measuring the collagen content of fish scales for our research entitled “Demineralized Fish Scales as
High Efficiency Bio-piezoelectric Nanogenerators”. However, we regret to inform you that our efforts
have been fruitless. Although we have found some indirect laboratory methods of measuring collagen
content through the determination of a particular protein – hydroxyproline, which is a precursor of
collagen, this method is relatively inaccurate and difficult to perform here in our locality. The reagents
involved are not available in our country and are, in retrospect, quite expensive for the student budget.
Since the manual approach was not available, we have decided to ask the DOST’s Material Science
Division (MSD) if they have any equipment or method that might help us with the aforementioned
goal. However, they did not have any means of measuring the collagen and instead referred us to the
Standard Testing Division (STD). STD’s response was similar, and they referred us instead to various
private and government laboratories including: SGS Philippines, Philippine Institute of Pure and
Applied Chemistry (PIPAC), and Intertek Philippines. We have tried sending emails to all of them and
all of them responded that they also do not have the technology or methodology that we need. In
addition to these laboratories, we also contacted the National Institute of Molecular Biology and
Biotechnology (NIMBB) in UP Diliman, but sadly we did not get a response.
It is for these reason that we are writing this letter to formally apologize for not being able to
meet your request. We are hoping for your kind consideration. Thank you Ma’am and God Bless!
Attached with this letter are some screenshots of our correspondence with the different
institutions mentioned above.

Sincerely,

The Researchers
